Parliament guards told no more 'mate'
Security staff at Parliament House in Canberra have been directed not to use the word 'mate' when addressing people in the building.
The Department of Parliamentary Services has confirmed a daily brief directed security staff to treat all visitors with courtesy and not to use the term 'mate' or similar colloquialisms.
Labor MP Roger Price has raised the issue in Parliament and the Speaker has agreed to look into the matter.
Mr Price says it is ridiculous.

I know you’re very busy & don’t have time to reply to correspondence from ordinary voters like me. That’s OK Mate: I do understand. If I had your schedule of BBQs, rugby games, monument openings & travel, I wouldn’t have time either Mate. 

 

 

Actually, whilst I’m on that subject, I’d like to compliment you on your selfless spirit of volunteerism. You are an example to all Australians – the way you’ve stepped-up to the plate whilst the Governor-General completes his induction is fantastic – not a word of complaint – “just do it
