history is never remembering the way it was...

history regurgitated...

no corker in this corked vintage...

The Killing Season is extremely slick and well produced and is presented with all the skill you would expect from journalist Sarah Ferguson. But there is something about it that makes you want to scream obscenities about rodents shagging while thumping a desk.

We've been there too many times.

We've had June 2010, February 2012, March 2013 and then June 2013. We know that Rudd and Gillard regard their prime ministerships as stuffed up by the other one.

For three years, Australia was consumed by Labor's tussle to the death. We watched on, partly out of democratic duty, partly in horror and partly because for a while there, it was the best show in town.

But we have now arrived in the far away waters of 2015, where the idea of debating who wronged who  – of who was chaotically nutbags or who was treacherously heartless – is less interesting than yet another article on what Kim Kardashian wore to the shops.

And even less compelling than Kim herself.

And while there is no doubt that plenty happened behind the scenes that we don't yet know about it – that does not mean we are keen to learn.

Details that could have been earth-rocking a couple of years ago, have lost their kapow. Like a bottle of wine you were keeping in a cold, dark place for a special occasion that turns out to be corked when you bring it out years later.

yes, unquestionably, they lied...

Sarah Ferguson believes that both Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard lied to her during the making of The Killing Season, which starts this week on ABC1. "I won't go into details – that one's for watching – but yes, unquestionably, they lied," she told me. "Not many times, because they have that skill, but there are contradictions that are clearly on screen. When stories don't add up, the audience will come to its conclusion."

Ferguson is famous for her fearless investigations on Four Corners and for her brutal interrogation of politicians when she was hosting 7.30 last year, so we'd assume she turned the blowtorch on Rudd and Gillard when she thought they were lying. Actually, no. The Killing Season is not that kind of show. It's a documentary about the six years Rudd and Gillard were in power, with comments from a wide variety of players. Her interviewing style in this case was what Malcolm Turnbull would call "forensic".

"It's obvious that you need different moods for different interviews," she said. "This is not a studio interview where it's about the theatre of combat. You won't see me much in the series. If it's good it's because we're letting them tell their story, not because I'm letting off fireworks on my side.

sticky piss of paper was leaking...

At the time, Ms Gillard refused to confirm or deny anything — and still does — but Mr Rudd, who has previously denied any involvement, has outed himself as the "possible" leaker, dismissing the call for confidentiality about the discussion.

"Did you give Laurie Oakes that account?" he is asked by presenter Sarah Ferguson.

"It's entirely possible, but just as it's possible that I spoke to a whole bunch of other journalists about it.

"Julia Gillard marches in and launches a leadership coup and then suddenly there's supposed to be some veil of total secrecy surrounding a conversation with me?"

Ms Gillard bemoans the leak as "so bad for me, because it was directly on character — questions about how I become prime minister", but stuck by her decision never to publicly "unpack" the meeting.

"I was very conscious that if you put even your toe on this very sticky piece of paper then you would be caught on it," she said.
