Hockey spruiks tax cuts for next election

Treasurer Joe Hockey is aiming to take the promise of tax cuts to the next federal election.

He says while there won't be any individual tax cuts before the election due next year, "certainly we'll be taking a proposal to the Australian people", he told Network Ten on Sunday.

Many average wage earners are being pushed into the second-highest tax bracket just through wage inflation, while the top tax rate sits at a hefty 49 per cent.

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill says he will not support a proposal to increase the rate of the Goods and Services Tax if it is a "backdoor opportunity" for tax cuts.

New South Wales Premier Mike Baird kicked off the GST debate yesterday by proposing the 10 per cent GST be boosted to 15 per cent.

Mr Baird argued the extra money should be spent on the health system and there should be compensation for households earning less than $100,000 a year.

State and territory leaders are preparing for a so-called "leaders retreat" with the Prime Minister in Sydney tomorrow to discuss future funding arrangements, after last year's federal budget saw tens of billions cut from projected state revenue forecasts.
