in the bin of kultured history...

converzashun in the pubsh of Aushtraliah

Malcolm Turnbull has binned “Team Australia” and we have so many reasons to say “good riddance”.

Tony Abbott liked to use the term, which portrayed the Australian community as a pre-existing “team” which migrant communities had to show they wanted to join, an “us” deciding on membership applications from a “them”.

Turnbull is portraying the Australian community, the “us”, as it is, a diverse variety of faiths and ethnicities – where “no one can look in the mirror and say all Australians look like me”.

And “we” all have a desperate, pressing mutual interest in binding together against terrorism, particularly the kind motivated by the perverted interpretation of Islam that apparently convinced the schoolboy Farhad Jabar to murder a police accountant, Curtis Cheng, on a Parramatta pavement last week.

pub politics...

Tony Abbott was echoing the pub conversations of everyday Australians when he said all cultures were not equal, the radio announcer and staunch Abbott supporter Alan Jones has argued.

The former prime minister continued his media blitz on Friday, speaking to Jones on Macquarie Radio..

the first law of holes ...

Hi Gus.

The champion of “Team Australia”, shamelessly promotes the values of self-indulgence, greed, exploitation, selfishness, arrogance, hubris, bigotry, sloganism, fear, ignorance, militarism, hypocrisy, self-righteousness, xenophobia, shallowness & materialism; not to forget dishonesty & deceit.

If Tony Abbott & George Pell are emblematic of western cultural superiority, the voice of Islam would surely have to be the least of our worries.

Even the most bigoted knuckle-dragging village idiot understands that the “First Law of Holes” is to stop digging when you’re in one.

rah-rah

The questions this elicits include these:

  1. How many majority Christian countries have been invaded by majority Muslim countries since 1945?
  2. How many majority Muslim countries have been invaded by majority Christian countries?

In fact, since 1945, nominally Christian countries of the West have perpetrated by far the most killing in the name of God. Histories of invasions of Muslim countries by the USA and its allies are easily googled. Most lists have more than 27 invasions with aerial bombing, ground troops or both of at least 14 countries.

These are: Afghanistan, Albania, Bosnia, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kosovo, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Turkey. Invasions of Christian countries by Muslims are far fewer in number and casualties.

Christians routinely claim these were not religiously driven. And indeed the real motivation in many attacks has been to steal oil or other resources. One of Abbott’s predecessors as Liberal leader, Brendan Nelson, once admitted this in an unguarded moment.

a lesson on life's pathways from the boss...

Mr Turnbull said he had been "chastened" by his experience of losing the opposition leadership by one vote to Tony Abbott in 2009.

Mr Turnbull, who served as communications minister in the Abbott government, reclaimed the leadership to become Prime Minister in September's dramatic spill.

On losing the opposition leadership, Mr Turnbull said "I was very glum about it all" but he was persuaded to stay in politics and had become a better person because of that defeat.

"I learnt a lot from that," he said.

"It's a hell of a way to learn I might say, but they say 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger'.

"I'm not sure that's entirely true but I'd say this: If you can pull yourself out of those tough experiences you are much stronger because you've got to be.

"The critical thing is to become more self-aware, to be aware of yourself, aware of your own limitations."

"I think I'm as a consequence of that experience, I'm obviously older, but I'm also wiser, more self-aware and that's enabled me to be better, or to do my old job as communications minister better but also to do this job as leader and Prime Minister better."

Mr Turnbull said the events that led to his downfall as opposition leader had made him more aware of his own weaknesses and strengths.

"You've got to recognise that when something like that happens to you, you may not be 100 per cent of the problem but you're a big chunk of it," he said.

"That doesn't mean you're a person of no worth, none of us are perfect.

"Self-awareness is absolutely critical. Talking about mental health, being aware of your moods is a very important thing."
