the science guy under the palin gun over global warming...

the science guy

With just one week to go before some 130 countries sign a landmark agreement to tackle climate change at the United Nations, a group of roughly 150 naysayers gathered Thursday in Congress’s Rayburn Building. They were there to see and discuss “Climate Hustle,” a documentary that purports to bust the “myths and hype” and expose man-made global warming to be a hoax.

But the bigger draw at the event may have been one of the panelists, Sarah Palin, the former governor of Alaska who remains a star, albeit a controversial one, in conservative circles. The overwhelmingly sympathetic crowd—this was invitation only—murmured in agreement and chuckled at her anecdotes about liberal “fear-mongering.” Palin wasted no time, attacking “Bill Nye the Science Guy.”

“Bill Nye is as much a scientist as I am,” Palin said. “He’s a kids’ show actor, he’s not a scientist.”

In fact, if we compare apples and oranges, Ms Palin is correct. Bill Nye is nothing more than a technical engineer, a profession which demands a high degree of precision, especially when working with planes as he did, while Ms Palin has a BA in communicating bullshit, with a mention of cheerleading high kick. Same difference. None of them are scientists, though both are entertaining in their chosen field of activity. Palin bullshits about politics while Nye educates kids about the bedangle of scientific facts, including global warming.

a moose in a toon...

Earlier this winter, Monica Zappa packed up her crew of Alaskan sled dogs and headed south, in search of snow. "We haven't been able to train where we live for two months," she told me.

Alaska's Kenai Peninsula, which Zappa calls home, has been practically tropical this winter. Rick Thoman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Alaska, has been dumbfounded. "Homer, Alaska, keeps setting record after record, and I keep looking at the data like, Has the temperature sensor gone out or something?"

Something does seem to be going on in Alaska. Last fall, a skipjack tuna, which is more likely to be found in the Galápagos than near a glacier, was caught about 150 miles southeast of Anchorage, not far from the Kenai. This past weekend, race organizers had to truck in snow to the ceremonial Iditarod start line in Anchorage. Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska tweeted a photo of one of the piles of snow with the hashtag #wemakeitwork.

But it's unclear how long that will be possible. Alaska is heating up at twice the rate of the rest of the country—a canary in our climate coal mine. A new report shows that warming in Alaska, along with the rest of the Arctic, is accelerating as the loss of snow and ice cover begins to set off a feedback loop of further warming. Warming in wintertime has been the most dramatic—more than 6 degrees in the past 50 years. And this is just a fraction of the warming that's expected to come over just the next few decades.

Of course, it's not just Alaska. Last month was the most extreme February on record in the Lower 48, and it marked the first time that two large sections of territory (more than 30 percent of the country each) experienced both exceptional cold and exceptional warmth in the same month, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. All-time records were set for the coldest month in dozens of Eastern cities, with Boston racking up more snow than the peaks of California's Sierra Nevada. A single January snowstorm in Boston produced more snow than Anchorage has seen all winter. The discrepancy set off some friendly banter recently between the Anchorage, Boston, and San Francisco offices of the National Weather Service.

When the moose in a toon is correct, it should be time to do something about it.

Global warming is real and anthropogenic... CO2 and methane from human activities — mostly in burning fossil fuels are the culprits. Sarah Palin is wrong.

the philosophical stone...

So ironically, philosophy is alive and well, even in the thinking of atheist scientists, whether they admit it or not. And let's remember that despite the protestations of Nye, Hawking, Dawkins, and the like, that it's thanks to philosophy — and the Christian worldview — that the sun rose on modern science in the first place.

Here again that fellow Eric Metaxas takes us on a tour of his BIG LIES.

Gus: modern sciences rose despite religion, rose in opposition to the religious dogma, and rose in exposing contrary views to religion. Sciences is a quest for knowledge while religion is a dogmatic misunderstanding. The Christian worldview was a major hindrance to sciences and religion did not help in any way.

Philosophy is dead in the sense that there is not much more to discuss philosophically but to run around the same old pots, including religious deceit, while we discover scientific information can and will shape our understanding of life beyond religion and philosophy.

I have often exposed the old trick that religious people have done and are still doing. They are trying to claim science as their own in order to contain the influence that science has outside religion. Popes did similar adoptions of past "paganism" and religious themes such as that of the Romans gods. This adoption helps contain and relate incompatible ideas to the religious mantra — absorbing, managing and vanishing new ideas that could disrupt and/or expose the con-ticks of religion, including its air of superior humility. Eric Metaxas is part of this religious subterfuge.

We are evolved from the same ancestors as that of the chimps. We are not fallen creatures from god's garden. Is this too hard an idea to accept? God does not exist. There is no intelligent designer either.

Morality is a substandard understanding of natural behaviour. Morality has been designed to corner the market of adaptation of social relationships for control and profit. Social relationships developed out of natural needs of the physicality of the human animal in a developing survival instinct of the group. This is why there are varied format of social codes, including morality, amongst humans due to various groups surviving in isolation or in various format of relationship between the groups. Various social behaviour codes for individuals were experimented in reaction to environmental factors, and seen to be beneficial or not for the group. Some were retained others were adapted, some became imbued with superstition. Traditions became the memory of such social codes to the point that traditions often superseded adaptation, in which imagination became a stronger driver than understanding. Understanding demands a greater intelligence management than simple acceptance of traditions. Superstitions developed easily when environmental factors were not in step with the acquired traditions . Morality emerged from a mix of social codes and superstition. This mix became a strong controller of behaviour and still is, mostly maintained by artful religious deceit in the arcane value of the traditions.

Sciences is reviving the understanding of nature, that is to say sciences are demanding we encourage this greater human intelligence management, while the religious morality is trying hard by various means to stop sciences undermining the tradition of superstitious belief. As well, the moralists from various traditions are trying very hard to control the market of general human morality.
Sciences offer a greater intelligent understanding in order to create better flexible social codes suited for our present position and for the future, including understanding of the changes that we have inflicted on the planet by misunderstanding it till now — via our superstitions, including religious beliefs.

nine chances out of ten...

You might have heard that quote from outspoken American author Upton Sinclair, who once wrote: “It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”

The quote is often used to illustrate how people’s allegiances can sometimes gum up their cognitive ability or just cause them to ignore truths inconvenient to their cause, or their customer’s cause.

TV presenter and science advocate Bill Nye “the Science Guy” dusted off Sinclair’s 1935 quote in a new video, in which he challenged climate science denialist and weatherman Joe Bastardi to two $10,000 bets. Nye bet Bastardi, a regular guest on conservative media, that 2016 would be one of the top ten hottest years on record.

He also bet Bastardi that the current decade would the hottest on record (Nye was responding to this November 2015 from Bastardi, published in the
Patriot Post).

The odds are:

50/50 that 2016 will be the warmest year on record.

95/05 that 2016 will be one of the 10 warmest year on record.

99/01 that 2010-2020 will be the warmest decade on record.

100/0 that 2100 will be warmer by more than 2 degrees Celsius than present (which is already 1.25 degrees Celsius above 20th century average.

70/30 that 2100 will be warmer by more than 4 degrees Celsius than present (which is already 1.25 degrees Celsius above 20th century average.

50/50 that 2100 will be warmer by more than 6 degrees Celsius than present (which is already 1.25 degrees Celsius above 20th century average.
