'Australia is my favorite European country': Twitter competes in wittiness following Eurovision

One does not have any choice but to come to term that the Eurovision Singing competition has become a political duck shooting gallery. Australia was the goose in the middle.

Here we have the judges and the "voters" all with their special prejudices, deciding on a song that is the best on the planet, apart from any tunes from Yankeedom.

On the last turn, Australia is streets ahead into the straight. The judges are professionals, unbiased and recognise good legs when they see them.

But the public around Europe is fickle. They have been told to hate Russia and to love Ukraine. The Yankee propaganda machine is working full bore. Even the last musical act "hors concours" is a song by Justin Timberlake, a Yank, as if the Europeans did not have their own superstar. They have plenty, but they would have to make an EU decision which no-one wants to make.

Of course the song from the Ukraine is political. It should have been disqualified as the terms of the Eurovision prohibit political songs. But anything against the Ruskies will do. The song is about Crimea, a Russian province claimed by many.

So, the votes from the people come in and behold, the Ruskies are thrashed and the Ukraine is promoted ahead of Australia. Bugger. What Australia is doing in a European song competition could frazzle an alien from planet Zork, mind you. But there you have it. Australia is like a mini world full of its own boots. And there is SBS with Lin Lin Chin who has read the news since Methuselah was a young spunk — and Julia Zemiro, no less, a lass born in Aix-en-Provence, who can speak a few European lingos and is so charming with the gap in her front teeth letting words flow like honey. SBS is unique on the planet. It was designed to help multiculturalism flourish without biffo and promote culinary dishes from around the planet. You can eat better food in Newtown and Strahan than you could on the streets of Marseille. Daily, the news from around the world in languages no-one ever heard of are shown front-on by the SBS network. As well SBS now has taken on NITV, which is the indigenous network.

But all this is under threat by various philistines in government because a) they hate multiculturalism and b) they want to squeeze cash out of everything worthwhile so they can buy some useless Navy submarines. Idiots.

So hopefully, Australia having come second in a European song contest, mostly due to the Voice and SBS (and of course an Australian entry from Korea, Dami Im) combined should give SBS some kudos. Don't hold your breath though. The vampires in the Australian government are not from Austria. They are born and bread from the State of Redneckery, which is a place where people eat pound steaks and hate anything with culture that does not smell like beer.

At least the judges in Europe have some taste.

a peaceful yank in sydney...

Awarded the Sydney 2016 Peace Prize, environmental activist Naomi Klein again criticised the Turnbull Government's inaction on climate. Deirdre Fulton from Common Dreams reports.

CITING HER WORK "exposing the structural causes and responsibility for the climate crisis", the Sydney Peace Foundation has awarded its 2016 Peace Prize to author and activist Naomi Klein

That work, said the jury, inspires people "to stand up locally, nationally and internationally to demand a new agenda for sharing the planet that respects human rights and equality," and serves as a reminder "of the power of authentic democracy to achieve transformative change and justice."

Responding to the news, the 46-year-old author of This Changes EverythingThe Shock Doctrine, and No Logo said she hoped the award would highlight the need for a "justice-based transition from fossil fuels, highlighting policies that dramatically lower emissions while creating huge numbers of jobs and battling systemic inequalities."

the aussie singer from korea should have won in yourp...

Thousands (over 300,000) have signed an online petition calling for the results of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest to be revised. The petition laments national juries’ votes interfering with the popular opinion, granting victory to Ukrainian entry Jamala.

The petition ‘Make Eurovision Song Contest revise the results of the song contest 2016’ was submitted by user Arthur Hovhannisyan, from the Armenian capital, Yerevan, two days ago and targets the European Broadcasting Union.

The author insists that the final outcome of the winning places went against the actual will of the contest’s viewers.

eurovision shoots itself...

Russia will not take part in this year's Eurovision Song Contest, organisers say, after host country Ukraine barred its entrant from entering the country.

Key points:
  • Ukraine barred Russia's Eurovision entrant from entering the country because she performed a show in Crimea
  • Ukraine says she violated government regulation by doing so
  • Eurovision organisers say they provided two possible solutions for Russia, but both were rejected

Ukraine's security services banned Russian singer Yulia Samoylova from entering the country because she had toured in Crimea after Russia's 2014 annexation of the peninsula.

In response, Russia's state-owned broadcaster Channel One has refused to air the popular event.

In a statement, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) said it had offered up two alternatives to Russia.

"These proposals were to either take part via satellite or to change their chosen artist to one who could legally travel to Ukraine for the duration of the contest," it said.

But both proposals were rejected.

The Eurovision organisers should boycott Ukraine on its stance. No other way out. Australia should boycott the Eurovision contest... Bugger off Ukraine. Ukraine's attitude is silly, petty, stupid and irrelevant. The rules of the show are quite clear but the organisers are unable to make Ukraine adhere to these, which stipulate that politics cannot be used in the contest:

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) on Thursday officially confirmed that Russia will not participate in Eurovision 2017 because it did not agree to the proposed alternatives after Ukraine's refusal to let Yulia Samoilova from Russia take part in the contest.

The EBU offered Russia to broadcast the singer's performance through a satellite, or to replace the contestant. Russia's Channel One called these options unacceptable and stated that it will not broadcast Eurovision.

"It is… regrettable that the organizers of Eurovision were unable to fulfill the conditions of their own rules and were unable to call on the country that expressed willingness to host this contest, to observe the rules of the host party, which are mentioned in the relevant documents of the European Broadcasting Union," he said.

endangered song contest...

Ukraine faces large fine after Russia Eurovision row - broadcasting union

The European Broadcasting Union said on Thursday that Ukraine faced a large fine due to severe delays in the organization of May’s Eurovision song contest in Kiev and a lack of cooperation with the EBU over the participation of a Russian artist. “As a result of this, attention was drawn away from the competition and the brand reputation of the Eurovision Song Contest was endangered,” the EBU said. Ukraine, the host country, barred entry to the Russian contestant because she had performed in Crimea. (Reuters)
