bad politics...

olympolitics

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has described the decision to ban Russian paralympians from the Rio Olympics as a “cynical move aimed at sidelining strong competitors.” Sputnik discussed the situation with French tennis player Michaël Jeremiasz who will carry the French flag during the Games’ opening on September 7.

“I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I welcome the Paralympic Committee’s and the IOC’s decision to condemn the organized cheating mentioned in McLaren’s report, but as an athlete I know that there are many of my colleagues who have never used drugs, those who made so many sacrifices for so many years and do not deserve this,” Michaël said.

He added that he didn’t recognize the principle of collective responsibility and that he sympathized with those who had been unjustly punished.

“The problem of doping and cheating exists in too many countries and this makes me very sad. There is a Russian tennis player whom I’ve known for quite some time now. I’m not 100 percent sure that she is not doping, but you can never be 100 percent sure that any of us athletes are 100 percent clean. Unless proven otherwise, she plays well and she is not a champion yet,” Michaël Jeremiasz emphasized.

their own competition...

Russia will hold its own sports competitions for the team of Paralympic athletes, who were excluded from the Paralympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, President Vladimir Putin said.

"I want to say to our Paralympians: of course, we will support you. We will organize special competitions where you will be able to show all your skills. Prizes for the winners will be the same as they would have been for the Paralympic Games," Putin said, Zvezda TV channel reports.

Putin also stated that the exclusion of the
Russian Paralympic team was an act of anti-humanism that became possible due to the interference of politics in sports.

"We have witnessed how humanistic foundations of sport and Olympism can be brazenly violated by politics, how traits such as greed, and perhaps even cowardice, take precedence over the principles of Olympism," Putin said.

Earlier, Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko told reporters that Russia would appeal against the decision to remove the Russian team from the Paralympic Games in Rio at a federal court in Switzerland, RIA Novosti reports.

"We will file a lawsuit at a federal court in Switzerland. Individual lawsuits are also possible. This is absolutely a political decision, and we do not understand how an organization that should be engaged in the development of Paralympic sport can make such a decision," Mutko told reporters. -

more nasty political decisions...

Russia, already suspended from next month's Rio Paralympics, has also been banned for the winter edition in Pyeongchang, South Korea in 2018 because of a state-sponsored sports doping program.

The Russian Paralympic Committee (RPC) announced the latest punishment handed out by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) on Tuesday (AEST).

"The decision taken by the IPC, upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding Russian Paralympians being excluded from the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, has also been extended to include the Winter Games in 2018 in Pyeongchang," the RPC said on its website.

Last week the Lausanne-based CAS, sport's highest tribunal, rejected an RPC appeal against the Rio ban.
