turnbull is front runner for an olympic medal in the turdthrowing event...

olympics alla aussie...

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has placed himself in the crosshairs of Australian sport's most bitter feud, in a move that could lead to the ousting of the country's most powerful Olympic official John Coates.

The ABC has also unearthed audio of the Prime Minister lavishly praising the woman who is challenging Coates.

Senior sports administrators have told the ABC they believe Mr Turnbull overrode his Sports Minister Greg Hunt to reappoint John Wylie as the head of the Australian Sports Commission (ASC).

Mr Wylie had clashed publicly and verbally with Mr Coates earlier this year after the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) boss had accused his Sports Commission counterpart of plotting against him.

It has led to a split in Australia's peak sporting bodies.

Mr Hunt had previously said he wanted to play peacemaker.

Mr Wylie's reappointment was not expected until after Mr Coates' future was resolved at an AOC board meeting in early May.

fizza...

The unpopular proposed changes to the Racial Discrimination Act are likely to fail, just like the Turnbull Government, writes Dr Martin Hirst.

ON MY Senate count, the Government’s push to amend section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act is likely to fail narrowly.

Labor, the Greens and Jacquie Lambie have all signalled they will strongly oppose the changes, and the Nick Xenephon team is also likely to vote against replacing the words "offend" and "insult" with ‘harrass’.

This means 39 “No” votes against the Coalition’s 36 “Yes” votes (29 LNP, 4 PHON, Bernardi, Hinch, and Leyonhjelm).

This would be a humbling, but not unexpected, defeat for the once "liberal" Malcolm Turnbull.

Turnbull has sold his soul to the Coalition’s rightwing nutjob element in order to cement his place in the history books as a one-time prime minister of Australia.

But that fact will be all that history records of Turnbull’s time in the Lodge. Posterity might also acknowledge that "Truffles" Turnbull had another, more apt nickname, "Fizza".

australian olympic capers...

A crisis meeting of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) board will be held this evening amid fresh claims of bullying within the organisation.

The meeting has been called during an increasingly bitter election campaign for the AOC presidency, with incumbent John Coates being challenged for the first time since he took the role 27 years ago.

Olympian Danni Roche is vying for the presidency, with a vote on May 6 at the AOC's annual general meeting.

Coates called tonight's executive board meeting, believing he is victim of a vindictive campaign to oust him as president.

Coates has also rejected claims of bullying from former AOC staffers including ex-chief executive Fiona de Jong which centre on long-time AOC media director Mike Tancred.

Tancred, a loyal supporter of Coates, is also facing new allegations, published by Fairfax Media today, that he harassed another former staffer for taking two days off during the Beijing Olympics in 2008 due to a miscarriage.

Tancred has denied any wrongdoing.

coates' coat has lint in the pocket...

The Australian Olympic Committee's presidential election has been so brutal Saturday's vote should be held in a cage not a board room.

After the bloodletting, here is what you could be forgiven for thinking about the candidates.

John Coates has such Machiavellian instincts he makes his mates from the ALP's NSW right seem like pimple-faced year 10 politics students.

His media manager is part rottweiler, part nightclub bouncer and has the Sydney media so deeply in his pocket several have choked on lint.

back as the head cheese...

John Coates has been re-elected as the president of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC).

Coates won 58 votes to 35 against hockey gold medallist Danni Roche at the AOC's annual general meeting in Sydney.

It was the first time the sports administrator had faced a challenge to his position in 27 years.

There was loud applause as the result was announced and afterwards Mr Coates briefly thanked members for their support.

"Thank you very much for the confidence you've shown in me," he said.

Mr Coates is expected to address the media later today.

AOC members are now voting on the vice-president positions.
