Scott Morrison threatens funding for independent and Catholic schools over closures amid coronavirus crisis

Coalition urged to explain the trigger point for school closures and to prepare to support essential workers

Scott Morrison has used the threat of withdrawing independent and Catholic schools’ recurrent funding to enlist their support in keeping non-government schools open during the Covid-19 crisis.

After Morrison’s discussions with both sectors on Wednesday, the Association of Independent Schools NSW has written to its members backing his position to keep schools open and noting the prime minister had warned “there were certain expectations attached to the recurrent funding provided by the Australian Government to Catholic and independent schools”.

It comes as the shadow education minister, Tanya Plibersek, has written to her counterpart, Dan Tehan, suggesting that while the opposition has been “responsible and constructive” in its comments on school closures it wants assurances the government is “properly preparing for … when they do occur” including ensuring essential services workers can continue to go to work.

Oh... And it's not because you've been in quarantine that you won't catch the virus...

it's going to be painful...

The Federal Government is postponing its May budget and introducing measures to thin crowds in Australia's bars, restaurants and other indoor venues because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the budget was being pushed back to October 6, five months later than usual.

State and territory leaders have also agreed to delay their budgets until later this year.

"The idea that you can actually put together any sort of forecast around the economy at this time is simply not sensible," Mr Morrison said.

greg combet to the rescue, as usual...

Former union boss and Labor industry minister Greg Combet has been appointed to advise the Morrison government on the fallout of coronavirus for the Australian workforce.

Industrial Relations Minister Christian Porter announced the new part-time role on Friday afternoon. [Gus: what's wrong with full employment on this issue?]

Mr Combet will provide strategic and policy advice to the minister and engage directly with union and business leaders.

The government has already announced some measures to help workers and business owners affected by the pandemic.

More changes are on the way as the situation rapidly escalates.

“Mr Combet’s background, insight and expertise will be invaluable,” Mr Porter said.

“Not only to the government but to all those directly affected, including employee and employer representatives and, most importantly, workers who are directly affected.”

Some businesses such as Telstra, Woolworths and the Commonwealth Bank have already promised to support casual workers who lose shifts because of the virus.

Qantas and Woolworths are working together to find temporary positions for airline staff who have been stood down.

“This is new territory for us all,” Mr Porter said.
