boris, the back-seat driver...

boris

Look on the bright side: at least we’ve had it confirmed who is actually running the country these days. And it isn’t the prime minister. Boris Johnson is no more than Dominic Cummings’s sock-puppet. A fairly shabby one at that. The reality is that without Classic Dom, there could be no Boris. All that Boris really amounts to is a parasitical ball of compromised ambition fuelled by a viral overload of neediness and cowardice. There is no substance or dignity left within the prime minister. His only instinct is his own survival.

The equation was quite simple. If Dom was to be fired, then Boris would have to fire himself, because it is inconceivable that the ersatz prime minister didn’t know the de facto prime minister had broken the lockdown rules by doing a runner to Durham. But just in case Boris had been in any doubt, Dom had arrived at Downing Street four hours before the daily coronavirus press conference to remind him who was boss. There were to be no sackings and no resignations. Not yet anyway. There may be in the days to come.

Not that Boris had actually wanted to front up the No 10 briefing. It was just that every other cabinet minister had phoned in to say they were self-isolating in their second homes. Or in Robert Jenrick’s case, his third home

Right from the off, Boris had looked rattled. The self-styled great communicator has lost the power of language and can now only talk in staccato bursts of incomprehensible Morse code. Even more disastrously, he is the populist politician who has lost track of the mood of the people. His survival skills have deserted him. The country is spitting blood at the arrogance of one rule for the elite and another for the rest, and Boris is totally oblivious.

selling the johnson sauce...

Top UK public servant Dominic Cummings is usually behind the scenes but he's now in the spotlight over a decision to travel the length of Britain when the country was under a coronavirus lockdown order.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is standing by the man who helped him win the Brexit campaign with a stunningly simple slogan, Vote Leave.

So, just who is Dominic Cummings? Here are five things you need to know.

1. He was one of the main architects of Brexit

Dominic Cummings really came into his own as director of the Brexit campaign in 2016 and was credited with its success in persuading 51.9 per cent of voters to ditch the European Union.

He came up with the infamous "take back control" catchphrase and honed in on a growing sense of nationalism.

He was also responsible for the famous red bus seen travelling around London with the slogan: "We send the EU £350 million a week: let's fund our NHS instead."

While that figure turned out to be an outrageous lie (the figure was actually much less), Mr Cummings still managed to use his message to beat a powerful government machine with plenty of funds and clout at its disposal.

3. He was crucial in Boris Johnson’s election

Mr Johnson hired Mr Cummings in 2019 and the pair embarked on a mission to "get Brexit done" — and that meant convincing voters to elect the former London mayor as their prime minister.

Mr Cummings even postponed elective surgery to take on the job.

While Theresa May struggled to pass Brexit legislation and make headway with Brussels, Mr Cummings' strong approach to the issue appeared to have been welcomed with open arms.

exception, if you have a big head...

Boris Johnson's aide Cummings has landed in hot water after he travelled to Durham in March to self-isolate with his family in defiance of lockdown rules. He reportedly made another trip in April.

Dominic Cummings has defended his March trip to the northeastern city of Durham in England during the lockdown, saying that London could provide no reasonable childcare options in case his wife and he had fallen seriously ill.

The adviser said that he thought driving to his father's farm was the best thing to do at the time.

"I don't regret what I did… I think what I did was reasonable in the circumstances", the aide said.

Delivering a speech in the Number 10 Rose Garden, Cummings said that he was not considering leaving his post, despite the outrage his actions caused. According to the official, the public anger was sparked by media reports "that have not been true".

Speaking right after the address, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he did not believe that Cummings had done anything to undermine the public health messaging amid the COVID-19 prevention measures in the country.

"Yes of course I do regret the confusion and the anger and the pain that people feel ... That's why I wanted people to understand exactly what had happened," the prime minister said to reporters.

The problem is not seen by Dominic Cummings... A MILLION PEOPLE  would have been in HIS situation BUT refrained from breaking the isolation rules. Those who would have, faced being arrested by the police and severely fined... Nothing reasonable about his views. You either play the game by the rules or pay the price. No exception, even if you have a big head.
