wars of convenience .....

‘Methinks we don’t – think, I mean, about anything outside our immediate visual horizon. Thinking is a poor way of understanding the world, which is too complex to be thought about effectively. That leaves hormones and unfortunate limbic wiring.

Consider the presidential wars. I get combative email informing me that Moslems are savage, barbaric, crafty, and patient, biding their time through the centuries to spit in apple pie, put Mom in a seraglio, and sodomize Boy Scouts – that they have spread by the sword, live by the sword, and lust to convert us all to Islam and sell us prayer rugs. The Gates of Vienna, 1453, all that.

Perhaps. There follows a list of Christian countries I can think of that have been conquered by Moslems since the Industrial Revolution:

On the other hand, to the best of my admittedly weak historical understanding, the following Islamic countries have been conquered by Christians: Egypt, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Jordan, Chad, Pakistan, Bangla Desh, Libya, Indonesia, Yemen, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Kyrgyz, Kazakhstan, Somalia, Sudan, and Uzbekistan, to name a few. On various occasions Christians have tried to conquer Afghanistan, but with no better luck than they deserved.

Since 1500, Christians also conquered all of North, South, and Central America, most of Southeast Asia, India, Australia, Nepal, Africa, China for practical purposes, and so on. I am not sure the record is altogether on the side of Christians in terms of inherent pacifism.’

729 more uselessly-wasted lives

From Al Jazeera

Figures complied by The Associated Press have shown that the US military death toll in March, the first full month of the security crackdown, was nearly twice that of the Iraqi army.

American and Iraqi officials say the Iraqi army has been taking more of a leading role than the US in the latest attempt to curb violence in many cities in Iraq.

The AP count of US military deaths for the month was 81, including a soldier who died from non-combat causes on Saturday.

---------------

Gus: and this figure does not include the maimed for life soldiers... This figure is more or less kept secret by the fighting force and could be about as high as 648, if we apply the quite accurate rule that for one US soldier's death, there are about eight badly injured... 729 uselessly wasted US young lives just in the month of March 2007... Mr Bush is a criminal.

Iraq Violence Kills 2 Dozen, Including 4 U.S. Soldiers

BAGHDAD, April 1 — Mortar attacks, suicide car bombs, roadside bombs, ambushes and gun battles killed at least two dozen people on Sunday, including four American soldiers, the authorities said.

The American military command said the soldiers were killed southwest of Baghdad just after midnight as they responded to an earlier bombing that killed two other American soldiers late Saturday. The insurgency has frequently tried to reap greater death tolls by carrying out attacks against rescue crews rushing to bomb sites.

The attacks coincided with a visit to Iraq by a Republican Congressional delegation led by Senator John McCain, who declared at a news conference that the new American security plan was “making progress” and that there was cause for “very cautious optimism.”

Injured in Iraq, a Soldier Is Shattered at Home

DUNBAR, Pa. — Blinded and disabled on the 54th day of the war in Iraq, Sam Ross returned home to a rousing parade that outdid anything this small, depressed Appalachian town had ever seen. “Sam’s parade put Dunbar on the map,” his grandfather said.

Private Ross says that from his first days of basic training, he was hooked. But just months into his tour in Iraq, an explosion left him with several disabilities. More Photos >

That was then.

Now Mr. Ross, 24, faces charges of attempted homicide, assault and arson in the burning of a family trailer in February. Nobody in the trailer was hurt, but Mr. Ross fought the assistant fire chief who reported to the scene, and later threatened a state trooper with his prosthetic leg, which was taken away from him, according to the police.

The police locked up Mr. Ross in the Fayette County prison. In his cell, he tried to hang himself with a sheet. After he was cut down, Mr. Ross was committed to a state psychiatric hospital, where, he said in a recent interview there, he is finally getting — and accepting — the help he needs, having spiraled downward in the years since the welcoming fanfare faded.

“I came home a hero, and now I’m a bum,” Mr. Ross, whose full name is Salvatore Ross Jr., said.

----------------------------

Gus: Salvatore, you are a hero but not the kind you were praised for. You have the daunting task of surviving with your disability acquired through war for ever after and please do not go to the button "what if"... This never works.

Should you be aware that you participated in a war that was illegal and fomented under false pretences, you should be very angry. Really angry. But your anger should be focused positively on minimising the harm to your brothers in arm. You should denounce the flippant president and his conspirators who designed an aggression against someone else, not savoury of course, but with the ultimate intention to steal — or not to be so blunt: to negotiate at a very advantageous price — OIL. All the life lost, all the injuries. all the pain, all the disintegration of Iraqi society, all of that was irrelevant to the grand prize: the "right" for your compatriots to drive their car without having to pay more for the petrol and without any restrictions — on consumption and emission...

Sad...

Use you special ability to fight not for the oil-grab but for the cause of truth and justice. These can be blurred often by other parameters such as greed. Release your heart and fight against the lies. If you don't then you'll be a bum...

You are a hero. denounce your president — the president of deceit...

Anyway it's not to me to tell you what to do...
