Govt breaching ad guidelines: Labor

from the ABC

Federal Labor has accused the Coalition of breaching the Caretaker Conventions by running taxpayer-funded television advertising in regional Queensland.

Labor says it has written to the Special Minister of State, Gary Nairn, demanding he explain why the Opposition was not consulted about the ads.

Labor's Penny Wong says the advertising about Australian Technical Colleges ran on two television channels early this week.

"This is clearly under-the-radar government advertising and it is against the rules which apply during an election period," she said.

"The Howard Government must explain why these advertisements were allowed to go to air during an election campaign."

The Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet's guidelines on the Caretaker Conventions advise that issues of a contentious nature are generally not the subject of taxpayer-funded advertising.
