Just three days after it went on sale, copies of The Costello Memoirs by former federal treasurer Peter Costello have been dumped in the bargain bins.
Staff at the Paper chain Bookstore in Manuka, the closest bookshop to Parliament House, reported 'pretty decent' sales yesterday at the full price of $54.99.
However at the Borders in the Canberra Centre shopping mall, The Costello Memoirs had already been discounted down to $34.95 and the book was available at the Big W in the same complex for the bargain basement price of just$32.95.
The manager of Readings Books in Melbourne's Malvern, a 15-minute stroll around the corner from former federal treasurer Peter Costello's office, was coy about sales figures in the former treasurer's electorate.

Liberal backbencher Peter Costello has put himself back in the political spotlight with an attack on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
On ABC1's Q and A last night, the former treasurer criticised the Government's handling of the economic crisis, in particular, the use of cash handouts to stimulate economic activity.
Mr Costello accused Mr Rudd of using the economic crisis to position himself for a place in history.
"Kevin's always looking for the big play. Kevin's always looking for the historical turning point that he can be at the centre of," he said.
"Where we have a financial crisis brought on by, I believe, failed regulation in the United States, it becomes an epochal turning point in the hands of Kevin, with him as the midwife to usher us into a new era."
He also said the Government should wind back its industrial relations policies if it believes the financial crisis will threaten jobs.

i don't think Kev has much choice but to railroad a few salvation dollars while juggling the general happiness of the populace and dipping his toes in the rotten soup cooked up by the triumvirate of Howard (and Costello), Blair (and Brown) and Bush (and Cheney plus Greenspan). Although the rot had started to set in earlier in the world economy, it was under these "watchmen" carelessness that the engine got a screw loose and blew up, going downhill while they said "don't worry, everything's fine-tuned...." . We knew better but we're only cartoonists...
I know some of the poorest people in Australia who could hardly survive on an oil rag before — despite working their butt off whenever possible and giving too much away for having a heart of gold — and going from mental trauma to penury of cash, having been rescued by the recent generosity of Mr Rudd. New tools, new clothes, new hope is worth a bit of pampering when you're in the dumps... Sure, some people might abuse the privilege but on balance it did more good than harm... Malcolm would have done most the same, Nelson may not have had a clue...
Now is time to shoot all the profiteers...

book signing off...
Mr Costello was kept abreast of events at home while in Israel last week, but said he was not changing his mind about going.
A second edition of his book, with a new chapter signing off his political career, is due out soon. He wrote it in April, a sign his mind was made up long ago.
