a hypocritical christian...

perry

Rick Perry, one of the leading Republican contenders for the 2012 White House race, is under fire after organising a huge Christian evangelical rally at a football stadium in Houston, Texas.

Although he has not yet formally declared his intention to stand, Perry is in second place in some polls behind front-runner Mitt Romney. But critics say he is risking his reputation on Saturday's planned day of prayer and fasting that he has declared in response to the economic and moral crisis facing the country.

Perry, the governor of Texas, has been accused of mixing politics and religion, and faces questions over the organisation financing the rally – which has been described as a "hate" group by discrimination monitors. Atheists filed an unsuccessful lawsuit to have the rally stopped and Perry's involvement declared unconstitutional.

Perry, in a message inviting Christians to the rally, said: "Right now, America is in crisis. We have been besieged by financial debt, terrorism, and a multitude of natural disasters. As a nation, we must come together and call upon Jesus to guide us through unprecedented struggles, and thank him for the blessings of freedom we so richly enjoy."

He added: "Some problems are beyond our power to solve, and according to the Book of Joel, chapter 2, this historic hour demands a historic response. Therefore, on 6 August, thousands will gather to pray for a historic breakthrough for our country and a renewed sense of moral purpose."

meanwhile at Injection Central...:

Perry has presided over more than 230 executions as governor. As the Texas Tribune notes, he's commuted the death sentences of 31 death row inmates, but in 30 of those cases, that was only because the Supreme Court ordered him to. The high court intervened against again last March, ordering that the state was required to consider DNA testing in an appeal from a death row inmate. In 2010, a Houston district judge ruled the state's death penalty system was unconstitutional because it violated the 8th and 14th Amendments. Earlier this year, a Texas House committee considered a bill to put a two-year moratorium on executions, in light of continued evidence of wrongful convictions. And in April, a psychologist frequently employed as an expert by the state in death penalty cases was banned from performing mental evaluations after she was found to be using "unscientific" methods in her official analyses. Through it all, Perry has maintained the same confident tone: "I think our system works."

blowing the jewish trumpet...

Invoking a passage from the Old Testament’s Book of Joel that he said inspired him to organize this event, Perry read: “You call us to repent Lord, and this day is our response.”

Perry, who is expected to announce in the next few weeks whether he will run for the GOP nomination, said nothing about his presidential prospects.

But political strategists say the event, his biggest appearance so far on the national political stage, is likely to impact his candidacy. It could strengthen his ties to evangelicals, a powerful bloc in the Republican Party, but also turn off more secular voters.

In remarks that lasted about 11 minutes, Perry read passages from Ephesians, Isaiah and Joel. He invoked the familiar Christian phrase “blow the trumpet in Zion” to loud applause from the crowd.

The Republicans’ new voodoo economics?

By Greg Ip, Published: August 20

When John McCain was running for the Republican presidential nomination nearly 12 years ago, he declared that Alan Greenspan was so critical to the economy that, if the then-Federal Reserve chairman died, he’d put sunglasses on the body, prop him up and hope no one noticed.

It’s safe to say that GOP opinions of the Fed have slipped a bit since. Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a newly declared candidate for president, said it would be “treasonous” for Greenspan’s successor, Ben Bernanke, to “print more money between now and the election” in an effort to boost the economy. Other candidates have been equally damning if slightly less extreme in their statements. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota has accused the Fed of “debasing the currency,” while Rep. Ron Paul of Texas has written a bestseller called “End the Fed.” The party’s economic standard-bearer in the House, Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, repeatedly charges the Fed with “bailing out” what he considers President Obama’s reckless fiscal policy and wants the institution stripped of its mandate to promote employment.

If Republicans dislike monetary stimulus, they loathe its fiscal cousin even more, routinely labeling Obama’s stimulus as ineffective, or worse, counterproductive. They want balanced budgets, the sooner the better. Bachmann, for instance, has advocated an immediate 40 percent cut to federal spending by barring any increase in the debt ceiling. This, too, is at odds with the party’s earlier views. The administration of George W. Bush sold its 2001 and 2003 tax cuts as Keynesian-style economic stimulus. Lawrence Lindsey, a top Bush adviser, even likened opponents of the tax cuts to President Herbert Hoover, whose obsession with balancing the budget in 1932 worsened the Great Depression.

Certainly, some of this rhetoric is just political opportunism. The Fed and the stimulus package are handy proxies for Republicans’ real target, which is Obama in the 2012 election. But something more fundamental is going on: The economic ideology of the Republican Party has changed in recent years in an important and little-appreciated direction. Liberals and conservatives in the United States have long differed on how much the government should meddle in individual markets, whether for energy or health care. But they have largely agreed that the government should have at least some role in smoothing out the ups and downs of the business cycle — what economists call “macroeconomic stabilization,” that is, containing inflation in good times and boosting employment in bad.

condemning the planet to death...

Under the purported banner of national security, Energy Secretary Rick Perry appears again to have heeded the self-described “desperate” calls of coal baron Robert Murray in order to prop up dying coal and nuclear plants. This time, Perry is planning to resort to federal emergency measures typically employed during wartime or natural disasters, according to Bloomberg.

Bloomberg first reported this latest development based on a draft Department of Energy (DOE) memo:

“Trump administration officials are making plans to order grid operators to buy electricity from struggling coal and nuclear plants in an effort to extend their life, a move that could represent an unprecedented intervention into U.S.energy markets.

The Energy Department would exercise emergency authority under a pair of federal laws to direct the operators to purchase electricity or electric generation capacity from at-risk facilities, according to a memo obtained by Bloomberg News. The agency also is making plans to establish a ‘Strategic Electric Generation Reserve’ with the aim of promoting the national defense and maximizing domestic energy supplies.”

Coal Mogul Blues

For more than a year, Murray, CEO of the nation’s biggest underground mining company, Murray Energy, has been pleading directly with President Donald Trump and Secretary Perry to bail out coal plants that have been unable to compete with natural gas and renewables and risk closing.

In August 2017, Murray sent the White House a letter spelling out his industry’s woes and complaining that his pleas had not yet been answered by the Trump administration. In particular, he was lobbying on behalf of Murray Energy’s biggest customer, FirstEnergy, which ultimately filed for bankruptcy in March 2018.

“We are desperate for the President to, once again, order Energy Secretary Perry to invoke Section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act for FirstEnergy’s merchant power plants,” wrote Murray.

Murray also puzzled that he couldn't figure out why this had not yet been done, writing: “In Youngstown, Ohio, nine days ago, after my personally speaking with President Trump, he turned to Energy Secretary Rick Perry and said three (3) times, 'I want this done.'”

In keeping with this request, last September, Perry called on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to fast-track a multi-billion dollar proposed “grid resiliency” rule that would have required utility customers to buy above-market rate electricity from otherwise uncompetitive coal and nuclear plants for the stated goal of preserving grid reliability — despite his own agency’s finding that preventing these retirements wouldn’t really do much for the grid.

The day before the announcement, Perry tweeted his support for coal.

Many denialists always say something like "CO2 is essential for life"... NO ONE IS DENYING THIS FACT. What global warming is about is not about CO2, but ABOUT THE EXTRA CO2 which has not been part of the natural equation for more than 3 million years as far back as we know. This extra CO2, now being more than 100 ppms ON TOP OF THE maximum 300 ppm under natural condition, has been added in the atmosphere by human activity unequivocally. Knowing that a variation of 120 ppm of CO2 in the atmosphere can induce a change of atmospheric/surface temperature of up to 10 degrees Celsius, we should STOP ADDING ANY CO2 into the atmosphere NOW.  Burning more coal will add more CO2.

Perry notified US President Donald Trump that he would leave his post back in October. The news came amid the impeachment proceedings launched against Trump by the Democrats as the US president stated Perry had advised him to contact Ukrainian President Zelensky.

Former governor of Texas and Energy Secretary Richard Perry stepped down from his post on Sunday, according to an official statement. He will be replaced by Dan Brouillette, who was backed by the Senate in advance.
