abbott points at abbot point...

Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says Australia can't allow a "green veto" to hold back a massive expansion of coal exports from Queensland.

The Federal Government has been involved in a public war of words with its Queensland counterparts over the $6.5 billion Alpha Coal Project in central Queensland.

The project would involve new port facilities at Abbot Point, sparking concerns it could impact on the health of the Great Barrier Reef.

Greenpeace is running an international advertising campaign urging investors not to back the project, because the coal would need to be shipped through the World Heritage-listed reef.

But Mr Abbott says it is possible to protect the reef at the same time as expanding coal exports from Queensland.

"We've been exporting now through the reef for many, many years," Mr Abbott told ABC radio.

"Obviously you've got to make sure that there are appropriate safeguards taken, but look I think it's very important that we do expand, appropriately, coal mining in Queensland.

"We can't let a green veto stop these projects which are vital for our future prosperity."

It would be funny if it was not so tragic. Diver Abbott knows best... Develop as much as possible but take "appropriate safeguards"... One can see enormous conflicts, here, that the federal government is trying to resolve... So here comes Diver Abbott and his big flippers... What are his version of "safeguards"? A lastic band around the coal loader? or a couple of placard that say "do not pollute here"?... MANY people in the area are opposed to the development of a new coal loader in a very sensitive area near Gladstone... Not just greenies but people who can see problems now and in the future... And by the way so far, there is no veto... so why mention the concept? Just to annoy everyone and the rest of us?... If you need someone to stir a useless laddle call Diver Abbott...

ocean protection...

Australia will create the world's largest network of marine parks as the world "turns a corner" on ocean protection, Environment Minister Tony Burke has announced.

The network, announced this morning, is made up of five main zones in offshore waters surrounding every state and territory.

But the Government will have to pay up to $100 million in compensation to commercial fishers who will be locked out of some of the new marine parks.

"It's time for the world to turn a corner on protection of our oceans," Mr Burke said as he announced the plans today.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says he is "instinctively against" anything which impinges on the rights of recreational fishermen.

a sticker of a sticking issue for the coalition...

The incriminating snapshot, posted on her website, shows Julie Bishop brandishing a sticker which declares her love for marine life and her desire to save it.That's it. She is smiling. She looks happy. She looks like the kind of person who likes dolphins and coral and who believes sea turtles should be allowed to roam free from persecution.
...

And that's when the environment minister brandished the incriminating shot of Julie ''Save our marine life'' Bishop, and pointed out that despite opposition honking on the marine park issue, the opposition environment spokesman hadn't grilled Burke on it, nor had another Coalition front-bencher.

The Coalition may have an ambivalent position on marine life, but it loves birds, ...

an angry open letter to newman...

Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke has launched a scathing attack on Campbell Newman, warning the Queensland Premier he will not get away with "environmental vandalism" as a public war of words continues over state resource projects.

After four years of negotiations, Mr Burke yesterday approved Gina Rinehart's multi-billion dollar Alpha coal and rail project for the Galilee Basin in central Queensland.

The Commonwealth had been unhappy about Mr Newman's decision to fast-track approvals for the $6.9 billion project, and threatened to take back control of major environmental approvals from the State Government.

The Commonwealth had been concerned the rail loop, earthworks and construction work needed to transport coal from the mine could affect the Great Barrier Reef.

Mr Newman said at a doorstop interview yesterday that there were other projects the Minister was "sitting on" and that he should "get out of the way".

Mr Burke has now written an angry open letter to Mr Newman, warning him that the Federal Government will stand in his way if he plans on "trashing the Great Barrier Reef".

"Given you have told the people of Queensland that there are a number of projects which I am currently delaying, it would be appreciated if you could let me in on the secret," the letter reads.

"Please either advise me which projects in your state are waiting my decision or alternatively provide some more honest information to the people of Queensland."

Mr Burke says the Federal Government will not tolerate "environmental corner cutting, shambolic process and environmental vandalism".

"Let me be clear, if what you want is for me to give approvals without conducting checks, then I will stand in your way," he said.

"If you want the Government to let you trash the Great Barrier Reef, we will stand in your way.

the first thing would be not to build abbot point port...

Wealthy companies are being asked to sponsor the Great Barrier Reef as part of a new initiative to improve its health.

The federal government is offering sponsorships, ranging from $1m to $7m, that will allow companies to use the reef in their branding while helping to save the world heritage-listed asset.

A glossy brochure has been released, inviting companies to stump up cash for conservation efforts such as restoring seabird nesting habitats and fighting the crown-of-thorns starfish.

It also urges investors, philanthropic organisations and individuals to get behind the Reef Trust partnership project, which has already received $140m in federal funding.

Idiots. The damage done by construction of a coal terminal at Abbott Point cannot be offset by donations "to save the reef". The feel good industry needs to destroy these stupid ideas coming from the government.
