the "symbolic" meat-grinder of artyomovsk.....

ONE COULD BE AT A LOSS TO UNDERSTAND... WE, OF THE LOUNGE-CHAIR PEACE BRIGADE, COULD BE DERANGED ENOUGH TO THINK THAT CAPTAIN RUSKY HAS LEFT A WINDOW OPENED SO THAT FLIES CAN BE ATTRACTED TO THE MEAT GRINDER SO THEY WILL DROWN IN THE VINEGAR.

AS MENTIONED BEFORE, A GERMAN FRIEND SHOWED US HOW TO GET RID OF FRUIT-FLIES, BY HAVING A BOWL WITH SOME VINEGAR (ONE NEEDS MORE THAN VINEGAR, ETC) MIXED WITH A TOUCH OF DETERGENT AND WATER IN IT... IT WORKS.

The fight for the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, which started in the summer of 2022, continues unabated. The battle has morphed from one of dubious immediate strategic benefit to Russia into one that has come to symbolize its war efforts. It also highlights the current deficiencies in Russia’s Armed Forces.

Symbolism is not new to warfare. The Battle of Stalingrad, although it had strategic calculations, was also important due to Hitler’s fixation on its symbolic value.

Furthermore, symbolic acts can have strategic impact beyond their immediate military concerns. The problem is when symbolism overtakes sensible strategy.

Bakhmut, from a strictly military standpoint, does not significantly change the war. For Ukraine, however, Bakhmut’s defense is aligned with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s arguments that he will accept nothing less than the full restoration of his country.

Russia, despite superior military capabilities, has so far failed to take the city.

Urban warfare favors defenders because they possess an intimate knowledge of the terrain that aggressors don’t. Furthermore, when an army relies on artillery and tactical bombing to the extent that the Russian army does, it risks creating new enemy defensive positions in the rubble of the others they’ve destroyed.

This is a lesson the Russian army has had to relearn multiple times, especially in Chechnya, and forgotten once more.

Scott Ritter shares how Ukraine's Army, though they are fighting with great bravery, is simply outnumbered. The Russian army has more bullets and bodies to throw at the conflict each day. Colonel Douglas Macgregor has opined the same information. They've stayed too long in Bakhmut and lost tens of thousands of able soldiers. Meanwhile, Russia is training close to 300,000 men and women for the last 7 months and pumping out weapons every day.

questions.....

by Valentin Vasilescu

There are many questions about the special operation in Ukraine to which Russia gives evasive answers. For example, how could the Ukrainians surprise them in the Kharkov region with the “vans” counteroffensive in September? Or why was General Sergei Surovikin, a supporter of indirect action which deprives enemy forces of the necessary resources provided by NATO to continue the war, removed from command? Especially after it succeeded in stabilizing the fronts and began daily missile attacks on critical infrastructure, NATO combat material depots, trains transporting material and garrison unloading stations? The answer to these questions is that it had nothing to do with the real objectives of the special operation.

We can see what the goals of the special operation are by looking at the density of recorded casualties by the types of Ukrainian weapons the Russians have been focusing on over the past 4-5 months. We find that counter-battery radars were the priority, followed by artillery pieces and MLRS, infantry fighting vehicles and armored fighting vehicles, radars and AA missile systems, which are almost all produced by NATO. Recently, Russian AA defenses have focused on shooting down the American Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB), launched from the HIMRS, which combines a GBU-39 small-diameter guided bomb with engine-powered wings of the M26 missile.

We have seen how, over the Black Sea, Russian warplanes are testing unorthodox methods to neutralize the sensitive reconnaissance equipment of American unmanned aircraft, which directly provide intelligence to the Ukrainian military. At the same time, Russian air defenses pay little attention to shooting down old Soviet Tu-141 Strizh drones launched by Ukraine which randomly crash into Russian territory. On the contrary, Russian weapons are tested on a variety of targets on a daily basis, some new like Lancet kamikaze drones and others resulting from the modernization of existing weapons. This is the case with the FAB-100, 250, 500,1500 aviation bombs which have been equipped with a glide kit and GPS, which increases their accuracy and range to 40 km. Or the installation of old modernized T-62M tanks in various firing positions arranged in a judicious manner, instead of towed artillery pieces, which offer no protection to the soldiers.

Unlike Surovikin, General Gerasimov did not move a finger to prevent the influx of NATO combat equipment from the borders of Ukraine to the front line. Leopard2 tanks, Bradley combat vehicles, HIMARS and Harpoon missiles crisscross Ukrainian territory as if on parade.

Any mentally retarded person, with the exception of the generals who appear on television sets, can understand that the objective of the Russian special operation is not to occupy Ukraine, but to test the weapons of NATO, used by the Ukrainians. When NATO hands over even a small number of F-16, F-15, Eurofighter Typhoon, Gripen, Rafale or Mirage aircraft to the Ukrainians, Gherasimov will be thrilled because the Russians will be able to find the antidote for them too. Once Russia adapts its combat technique to the vulnerabilities of NATO weapons, Gherasimov will be given the green light to occupy Ukraine within a month.

On December 17, 2021, the Russian Foreign Ministry sent to the United States and NATO the draft of a treaty aimed at providing security guarantees to Russia, that is, a return of the central Europe to the situation before the 1997 Madrid summit, by withdrawing bases and foreign troops from all former socialist countries. The United States and NATO rejected Russia's proposal. Thus, for those who have a minimum of neurons to understand, the special operation is only an intermediate stage, carried out on the Ukrainian maneuvering field, on customer equipment, to repel the imminent invasion of Russia by the NATO. So that there is no doubt that Russia aims to achieve the goal it had proposed to the United States and NATO, it has taken the decision to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus .

This helps to understand why Emperor Xi Jinping visited Moscow. The United States does not accept becoming the second largest economy in the world and has planned a war with China through Taiwan, as it is doing with Russia through Ukraine. China's last war was against Vietnam in 1979, with both armies using Soviet weapons or clones thereof. Meanwhile, China has developed weapons similar to Western weapons that have not been tested in real conflict. If Taiwan had been armed by Russia, China would have offered its new weapons to Ukraine for testing. Since Taiwan is armed by the United States, draw your own conclusions.

depleted.....

by: Sébastian SEIBT

“The US wanted to have the most efficient weapons in case of armed conflicts in Europe against Soviet tanks,” Hawn said.

Depleted-uranium shells proved to be ideal against tanks, as “they are much denser than the other, more widely available heavy-tank ammunition”, Hawn said, citing another advantage in its combustibility. “They are extremely flammable and self-sharpening rather than flattening, like tungsten ammunition," he explained, adding that these munitions often lead a tank to explode because of the heat produced near its fuel tank.

One of the major downsides remains the fact that, even when depleted, uranium is quite toxic. Although countries including France, the UK, the US, China and Pakistan have produced such shells, they remain in limited use.

"For most countries, this is 'politically toxic' ammunition. The cost-benefit equation compared to tungsten rounds is not in favour of uranium shells," Hawn said.

Uncertainty over health risks

Only the US and UK have openly used the armour-piercing shells, notably during the first Gulf War (1990-1991) and the wars in the decade following the breakup of Yugoslavia (1991-2001). Many studies have since been published in an effort to evaluate their potential damage to health.

Research on the subject initially focused on the health risks incurred by soldiers in handling the depleted-uranium shells. The focus later shifted to the long-term health risks incurred by local inhabitants due to radiation. For example, studies have been conducted in Iraq to link – unsuccessfully – an increase in cancer cases in certain regions to the use of depleted-uranium shells by the US army.

The risks are two-fold: first, debris from the shells remains radioactive and potentially dangerous in case of prolonged exposure. Second, the shells emit a cloud of radioactive dust upon impact that goes on to pollute the environment. Soil and water tables can thus be tainted, which can then contaminate local populations through ingestion, a report published by the Royal Society showed

Meanwhile, the US and UK have insisted for years that the health risks are minimal. The British Royal Society concluded that the risk of lung cancer is somewhat higher, but only in cases of direct exposure to the shells for long periods of time.

Despite the large body of scientific work on the subject, the UN has deemed it necessary to continue evaluating the health risks tied to the use of depleted-uranium shells while noting that no significant proof of health risks has yet been established.

useless sacrifices.....

The head of the Wagner Group private military company (PMC) Evgeny Prigozhin has described Ukraine’s losses in the battle for the city of Artryomovsk as almost fatal to Kiev’s entire military. The sacrifices made by his force for the sake of Russia were worth it, he added.

“As of today, the battle for Bakhmut has almost destroyed the Ukrainian army,” Prigozhin said in a statement on Wednesday, using the name by which Kiev calls the city. The clash also “gave a serious beating to PMC Wagner,” he acknowledged.

He called the battle the “general engagement” of the entire conflict and said that in it Wagner troops got pitted against Ukrainian armed forces and “foreign units installed into them.” A victory by his troops would be “a turning point” and a historic event, securing a Russian victory, Prigozhin predicted.

“The Russian army alone will be left on the chessboard, and all other pieces will be removed,” he forecast. “Even if PMC Wagner is destroyed in the Bakhmut meat grinder but takes the Ukrainian army with it … it would mean that we have accomplished our historic mission.”

The fight for Artyomovsk has emerged as one of the most intensive and bloody engagements of the armed conflict in Ukraine, with both sides reportedly suffering significant casualties. Western officials said that the city poses no strategic military value, but Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky pledged to defend it as long as possible after proclaiming the city a fortress.

The Ukrainian leader explained his refusal to withdraw in an interview with The Associated Press earlier this week. He claimed that if Russia were to capture Artyomovsk, his government would come under international and domestic pressure to seek peace with Moscow.

“Our society will feel tired,” he told the news agency of this scenario. “Our society will push me to have compromise with them.”

russian flag.....

The head of the Russian private military company (PMC), Evgeny Prigozhin, has announced a milestone achievement in the battle for the city of Artryomovsk (known in Ukraine as Bakhmut), publishing a video allegedly taken in front of the town’s administrative building on Sunday evening.

“We hoisted the Russian flag with the inscription ‘Good memory to Vladlen Tatarsky’ and the flag of PMC Wagner on top of the city administration of Bakhmut,”Prigozhin said in the clip.

Prigozhin’s announcement comes just hours after prominent Russian military blogger Tatarsky (real name Maksim Fomin) was killed in an apparent improvised explosive device blast in a café in Saint Petersburg on Sunday afternoon.

Legally speaking, Bakhmut is taken. The enemy is concentrated in the western districts,” the head of the PMC added.

The battle for Artyomovsk/Bakhmut has emerged as one of the most intensive and bloody engagements of the armed conflict in Ukraine, with both sides reportedly suffering significant casualties. Western officials have claimed that the city poses no strategic military value, but Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky pledged to defend it as long as possible after proclaiming the city a fortress.

Kiev’s attempts to cling onto Bakhmut, regardless of the losses, has “almost destroyed the Ukrainian army,” Prigozhin claimed earlier this week. However, Wagner fighters, who led the charge to capture the Donetsk People’s Republic city, also took “a serious beating,” he acknowledged.

FREE JULIAN ASSANGE NOW....

the first battle for artyomovsk......

BY Tatiana Obrenovic

May 7, 2023

The Battle of Bakhmut represents the most hard-fought battle and abhorrent bloodbath the world has not seen in the last 80 years.

Up until only a year ago, Bakhmut was just an ordinary ex-Soviet Ukrainian provincial town, which lived its idle parochial life in anonymity. What the mood of its residents was like in the eve of the Maidan Coup could clearly be seen in the fact that even 94 % of its citizens voted for Viktor Yanukovych. A massive citizens’ protest against the Euromaidan Coup aftermath, at the then Artyomovsk, the Bakhmut of today, happened on the 1st of March 2014.

Let me stray away a little into a historical detour here so as to avoid the confusion with the names of the battles. The Battle of Artyomovsk was a battle which happened in the city of Artyomovsk in 2014 (historically and since 2016 known as Bakhmut) during the war in Donbas in eastern Ukraine. Armed confrontation occurred between the National Guard of Ukraine and the Special Operations Forces of Ukraine against pro-Russian militias fighting for the Donetsk People’s Republic. At about the same time, the most brutal massacre in Odessa occurred on the 2th May 2014.

The Russian embassy in the U.S. stated in memory of the tragic day that “May 2 marks the nine-year anniversary since the date of the tragic events in Odessa. “On this day in 2014, a brutal crowd of Ukrainian fanatics committed a merciless murder of several dozen civilians. Like Nazi castigators, these extremists drove defenseless people, among them – women and elderly, into the House of Trade Unions with sticks and steel bars, and then set it on fire with Molotov cocktails. At least 48 people were burned to death, poisoned by carbon monoxide or died after jumping out of windows. Hundreds were seriously injured. Their only ‘fault’ was their disagreement with the aggressive policies of the neo-Nazis who came to power and their desire to remain Russian,” the statement said. The U.S. decided ‘not to notice’ that Kiev hid the truth about the Odessa massacre’.

The words of Eva Karene Bartlett, a Canadian war reporter from Donbass about the Odessa Massacre on 2 May 2014, ring sadly true:

“It’s now clear that many of the anti-junta activists who occupied the Trade Unions House were neither burned to death nor died of smoke inhalation, but were savagely shot at point-blank range by agents and thugs who had infiltrated the building to kill as many of the occupants as possible, burn the corpses, and then slip away without notice. Some of the victims–like a young woman who was eight months pregnant –were strangled with an electrical cord and left slumped backwards over her desk in a room that shows no sign of fire or smoke damage. In another case, a woman was stripped naked from the waste down, raped, killed, and set ablaze”

Igor Damjanovic, a Montegrean/Serbian war correspondent from IN4S.net from Donbass, recalls the past details in his live reports: “At the end of the month of June, the rebels attacked the military warehouse in Artyomovsk, where according to some estimates, there were 500 tanks parked there and other units of armored combat equipment. The rebels did not succeed in occupying the warehouse, but they managed to capture a number of tanks from the Artyomovsk warehouse, several combat tanks and some military equipment and exactly that was going to later create the main ‘pillar’ of the future military forces of the Donetsk National Republic. In the later process of the de-Sovietization and the annihilation of anti-Nazi legacy in Ukraine, the pre- revolution name of the city was reinstituted, which is Bakhmut.”

If we go back in history, Fiodor Sergeyev or Comrade Artyom was a renowned revolutionary, a close associate and a friend of the future leader Joseph Stalin and Marshal Clement Voroshilov. Comrade Artyom died in 1921 and was buried in Mass Grave No. 12 of the Kremlin Wall Necropolis in Red Square, Moscow. Three years later, Bahkmut got his name. His newborn son, Artyom Sergeyevich, was officially adopted by Stalin. Artyom, the same as two biological sons of the Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin, actively participated in the WWII. Artyom was captured and then escaped from German captivity and after the war he even advanced to the rank of a general. Stalin’s younger son Vasiliy, a war hero as well, used to be a pilot in the WWII. The central street in Donetsk, which stretches for more than 10 kms still bears the name of Comrade Artyom.

Fast forward to 2023: “The situation is more or less the same in other cities in Donbass, which is not controlled by the Kiev regime,” Igor reports. Up until the month of May when the first heavier artillery bombing occurred, the situation in Bakhmut was relatively peaceful. Some time in August on all the roads towards the city, Russian troops started advancing, the bulk of which was represented back then by the soldiers of the private Wagner military group. Igor reports that the direct battle for the city began sometime in the middle of November 2022 and at the beginning of this year 2023 the Wagner forces began to get reinforcement by the members of the regular Russian Army, which defend the flanks for the Wagner troops and they also provide artillery support.

“The Battle of Bakhmut represents the most hard-fought battle and abhorrent bloodbath the world has not seen in the last 80 years. The forces which both warring sides engaged in this military zone outnumber the pre-war population of the city. Thus, considering the number of the forces engaged and their technical capabilities and professional competence on one hand and the significance the top political leaders in Kiev headed by Volodymir Zelensky give to it in the public on the other hand, we can say with determination that the Battle of Bakhmut considerably surpasses the limits of yet another ordinary, provincial city,” Igor Damjanovic reveals to his viewers.

Only when the Battle of Bakhmut is definitely over, we shall be able to make a more relevant estimate of the number of the casualties both the dead and the injured, on both sides in the conflict. However, if we take into account that about one hundred and fifty days ago, the Western media reported their rough estimates that Ukraine is losing a three-digit number on a daily basis. The number of the dead Ukrainians in this gory and fierce battle could easily reach and even surpass the number of 20 000. Relevant and credible sources Igor Damjanovic has had a chance to consult estimate the Russian losses in the Battle of Bakhmut at 2 to 3 times less than the Ukrainian losses. Given that it is an offensive operation, according to the statistics it can be considered a great success, outlines Igor.

A major problem for Ukrainians is that for the Battle of Bakhmut apart from seven independent brigades of the regular army and the regular territorial defense, they sent their top specialists’ units in SBU ALFA, an elite Ukrainian Spetsnaz group, the border military, the rest of the former neo-Nazi Azov battalion and the mercenaries from the so-called Foreign Legion. Many high-ranking officers from the elite units and veterans from the conflicts in Donbass in 2014 and 2015, who had a status of undisputed heroes in Ukraine have remained in the mud of Bakhmut for good.

“The risks of war present no danger to those who are well prepared for it in advance and who are mindful of their place in the nation’s defenses. Confusion and panic usually appear wherever there is no adequate organization or appropriate leadership at a time of grim trials” (Marshal Georgy Zhukov).

The Battle of Bakhmut has taken away the top military units and organized brigades in the Ukrainian army from Zaporozhye and Kherson direction and it undoubtedly reduced the Ukrainian army capacities for the long announced counteroffensive and in all probability the counteroffensive appears to have been postponed. Depending on the further developments in the future, the Battle for Bakhmut might be remembered as the most crucial battle between Russia and Ukraine.

If we go back in history in order to possibly establish some historic, political and military parallels, it might be worth mentioning that Hitler’s occupation and the attack on the Kingdom of Yugoslavia moved Operation Barbarossa forward for a few weeks and de facto foiled the grand plans by Wehrmacht to siege Moscow before winter in possibly the same way as this Battle of Bakhmut now has done in the grand scale of the ongoing Russian Special Operation in Ukraine. Lest we forget, Operation Barbarossa, original name Operation Fritz, during World War II was a code name for the German invasion of the Soviet Union, which began on June 22, 1941. The German troops failed to defeat the Soviet forces in the campaign signaled a crucial turning point in the war.

The battle of Bakhmut may as well undermine the morale among the Ukrainian soldiers, which has so far proven not to be sagging at all which represents an important factor in preserving the stronghold of Bakhmut, besides the support in arms and military equipment from the Political West. From the Kharkov Region there is some information that certain military forces units refuse to go to Chasov Yar, which is where the Wagner group might wreak havoc to their troops. The Chasov Yar represents the key point for further progress to Konstantinovka, Slavyansk and Kramatorsk.

The battle of Bakhmut is practically over – predicts Igor Damnjanovic, a Serbian war correspondent who is based 50 kms away from it. The Wagner forces are in control of the center and the most important strategic facilities and the rest of the Ukrainian units in the Western part are in operational or even factual encirclement. Let me explain what it means: military encirclement means that the evacuation and supply routes are under constant artillery fire of their opponents. There is a question emerging: what will the Russians gain from a successful victory in the Battle of Bakhmut apart from the postponement of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, the destruction of the best units of the Ukrainian army and provision of conditions for future advancement towards Slavyansk and Kramatorsk.

The end of the Battle of Bakhmut will bring yet another positive element for the Russian army thanks to the establishment of complete coordination between their private military Wagner group and the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation. It seems that after a number of misunderstandings from earlier on, a compromise has been established between Wagner’s disregard for the norms by the Ministry of Defence as regards the use and deployment of the ammunition and missiles on one hand and a standardized system of decision making in the Ministry of Defence. Wagner Group appears to have accepted the authority of the Russian Ministry of Defence to some necessary extent on one hand and the Russian Ministry of Defence has accepted the Wagner Group just the way it is

On a related note, Miodrag Zarkovic, a Serbian war correspondent with Helmcast Channel, reports directly from Donbass as well that the Ukrainian counteroffensive is still not happening even though it kept being announced for quite a while; yet it seems to be scheduled for 15 May. Zarkovic reveals that 2 May was “in the cards’” for the Kiev regime too. He goes on to say that even if the Ukrainian counteroffensive does get to be orchestrated somehow at some point, it will not be an easy feat for the Kiev troops. It will certainly not go according to their plan and surely not the way it is being announced by the Western mainstream media – Zarkovic elaborates in his report. And then the Kiev “brave heroes of war” announced their counteroffensive for 2 May and then they had to cancel because “heavy rains” were announced’ in the weather forecasts. “Not a drop of rain fell on 2 May,” – confirms Miodrag Zarkovic, after all, modern military equipment does not heavily depend on the weather circumstances.

One would not postpone anything crucial such as the great counteroffensive for months, which the result of this war would crucially depend on. Yevgeny Prigozhin stood out to say that it would most probably happen on the 15th. Miodrag Zarkovic is positive that it is a military tactic by the Russians to entrap the Ukrainian troops any time soon. He draws his conclusions based on the “colourfully dramatic” ways Prigozhin seems to be applying in his addresses to the public in one way or another. All in all, the Ukrainians keep putting off this counteroffensive that it is possible that not even the Ukrainian highest ranks are not quite certain of their plans any more. Even the Western mainstream media report (if we put the notoriously heavy rains aside) that the Russian troops have managed to strike and obliterate the immeasurably huge amounts of Ukrainian weaponry, which had previously been sent by the West. Miodrag tends to think that there is not going to be a counteroffensive or at least that the Ukrainians will feign a counteroffensive (my note to readers: in the same way as Hamlet feigns madness) yet there will not be a real one. Zarkovic confirms that after visiting Energodar, Crimea and a few other cities in the past week that the Russian lines of defense are seriously jaw-dropping, “heavyweight” defense lines even in Crimea. He dares say without fear of contradiction that these are the strongest and most powerful defense lines on Earth that not one single army in the world can penetrate at this point in time.

russian again....

The key Donbass city of Artyomovsk, known as Bakhmut in Ukraine, has been fully liberated by the Russian forces, Evgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner private military company has announced.

“Today at noon, Bakhmut was fully captured,” Prigozhin said in a video address published on Saturday.

The last part of an area of high-rise buildings where the Ukrainians were holed up is now under the control of Russian forces, he stated.

The Wagner Group will remain in Artyomovsk until Thursday, Prigozhin said, adding that during this period, fortifications will be created across the city.

Control will then be passed on to the Russian Defense Ministry, and Wagner Group servicemen will go on leave to rest and regroup following months of intense fighting.

According to Prigozhin, the PMC’s operation in the city, which he called ‘the Bakhmut meat-grinder’, had gone on for 224 days. “We’ve taken the whole city – every building – so that nobody could say that we didn’t capture some small part of it,” he said.

Kiev has denied Prigozhin’s claims that Artyomovsk has been captured. Ukrainian military spokesman Sergey Cherevaty told Reuters: “This is not true. Our units are fighting in Bakhmut.”

The Wagner chief also personally addressed Ukraine’s president, Vladimir Zelensky, saying, “without sarcasm”that the Ukrainian troops “fought bravely, fought well”defending Artyomovsk.

“Today, when you see [US President Joe] Biden, kiss him on the top of his head and tell him that I said ‘hi,’” he said.

Earlier on Saturday, Zelensky arrived at the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan, where he is expected to hold talks with Biden.

fighting the flag.....

The strategic northern Donetsk region city of Artemovsk (also known as Bakhmut) was fully liberated by on Saturday by units of the Russian military and the Wagner Group, with tens of thousands of Ukrainian troops and foreign mercs believed to be buried in the city’s ruins.

Ukrainian forces are firing mortars at apartment buildings in Artemovsk following the city’s total liberation by Russian forces in an apparent attempt to blast a Russian flag unfurled over one the city’s high-rises off the building.

“Once they gave the command, as soon as we seized the nine-story buildings, the ‘Tetris’ as we call them, we immediately put up our flag to show the whole world that this is our land, not that of some kind of Nazis and their ilk,” one of a fighters told a Sputnik correspondent in Samolet district – the last area of Artemovsk to be cleared.
