Biden aide responds to Putin endorsement

White House representative John Kirby did not appreciate the Russian president’s preference for the incumbent in the forthcoming US elections.

Russia should stay away from the US elections altogether, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters at the White House. Kirby was speaking after Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the qualities of his US counterpart Joe Biden, during an interview with a Russian journalist on Wednesday.

Putin said he would prefer if Biden won the November election, as he is more experienced and predictable.

“I think Mr. Biden – no, I’m sorry, I think Mr. Putin knows very well what this administration has been doing to counter Russia’s malign influence around the world and certainly what they’ve been doing inside Ukraine,” Kirby said at the White House on Thursday, in response to a question about the Russian leader’s apparent endorsement.

“Mr. Putin should just stay out of our elections,” Kirby added.

The retired US Navy admiral has previously worked for the State Department and the Pentagon, before coming to the White House as the spokesman for Biden’s National Security Council. He often briefs reporters on foreign policy matters, leaving domestic politics to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

Putin seemed to endorse Biden in a sit-down with Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin in Moscow. When asked about the impending US elections, he said it would be inappropriate for Russia to meddle in what was an internal American matter. When Zarubin asked whether he would prefer to see Biden or his rival Donald Trump in the White House, however, Putin answered directly.

“Biden. He is a more experienced and predictable person, he is a politician of the old sort. But we will work with any leader who gets the confidence of the American people,”he said.

Putin even made excuses for Biden’s alleged cognitive impairments, saying he didn’t see any sign of this when they met in Geneva in mid-2021.

Biden, 81, has declined to take the cognitive test as part of his annual medical examination. Earlier this week, a special prosecutor investigating his illegal retention of classified documents from when he was Barack Obama’s vice-president described Biden as an “elderly man with a poor memory,” unlikely to be convicted by a Washington, DC jury.

Western media is once again using infowar methods to distract public opinion from the reality of the Ukrainian front lines. The recent death of Russian oppositionist Alexey Navalny has served as an excuse for Western outlets to disguise yet another Ukrainian failure – in Avdeyevka, a key city in Donbass where the Russians won an important victory.

Navalny died on February 16 while serving his sentence in an Arctic prison. The case is still under investigation, but all evidence points to a natural death, resulting from a sudden cardiac syndrome. However, as expected, Western newspapers have published articles questioning the death and suggesting a criminal involvement on the part of the Russian government.

Distorted and biased materials published by the Western press have led public opinion to believe that the Russian government murdered Navalny. To strengthen the narrative, a myth has been created around the image of the Russian dissident, describing him as a great opposition leader, capable of leading a national movement to challenge Vladimir Putin’s government. However, none of this is true.

Pushing for a xenophobic and Nazi-like ultranationalism, Navalny has never been a popular leader in Russia. His project of ethnic polarization of Russian society, with strong hostility against Muslims and Russian citizens from the Caucasus, was fomented by Western intelligence due to NATO’s expectations of generating internal frictions among Russians. Ethnic divisionism and separatism have always been Western bets to attack Russia – and Navalny’s racist movement was used by Western agencies to advance such goals.

However, for obvious reasons such fascist ideas were never popular in Russia, which is why Navalny was unsuccessful in establishing a solid political opposition to Vladimir Putin. As a political leader, he was almost irrelevant, which is why there was no interest on Moscow’s part in eliminating him. Not by chance, Western accusations are devoid of any evidence, being just unfounded tales.

Sometimes one event encapsulates the zeitgeist. Alexei Navalny’s death from what are almost certainly unnatural causes is one such moment. One of the most heroic figures of our time appears to have been eliminated by one of the most despicable and loathsome. The only thing that is really surprising given Vladimir Putin’s track record is the brazenness of his apparent murder.

While Putin may have perfected the dark arts of political repression he is hardly alone in his enthusiasm for silencing political opponents. One of Putin’s key allies and toadies in Belarus has driven opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya into exile, from where she would be unwise to return. Alexander Lukashenko is not the only European leader taking lessons from Putin, however.
