Despite Growing Opposition And Serious Problems At Home, Democrats Make Ukraine Funding Their Top Priority

Congress averted a government shutdown this weekend, agreeing to 45 days of funding to give members time to pass appropriations bills for the full year. Incredibly, Democrats seemed prepared to shut down the government over their desire for increases in Ukraine war funding. Republicans, by contrast, bucked Senate leader Mitch McConnell to keep the government open without such funding.

While shutdown battles have become common, this one had absurd moments. Democrats tried to delay votes with everything from “magic minutes,” which allow party leaders to speak at length, to Democrat Rep. Jamaal Bowman pulling a fire alarm in the middle of a vote, forcing the evacuation of a House office building.

With hundreds of Jan. 6 protesters facing excessive sentences, which Department of Justice prosecutors say is because they attempted to delay or obstruct an official congressional proceeding, some Americans began demanding the elected member of Congress be held to the same excruciating standard. Bowman, a former school principal, later claimed he didn’t understand how fire alarms work.

Even after the House passed the bill, Democrat Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado further delayed the eventual passage by placing a hold on the bill. The procedural delays were partly a result of efforts to force a shutdown that could be blamed on Republicans. Conventional wisdom in Washington is that Republicans get blamed for government shutdowns regardless of who is responsible.

Democrats Willing to Shut Down over Ukraine

However, Democrats’ delays were also about a demand for additional Ukraine funding. Some Republicans, such as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, also want U.S. taxpayers to finance even more of the war against Russia, which has descended into an expensive quagmire.

“Despite nine months of bloody fighting, less than 500 square miles of territory have changed hands since the start of the year. A prolonged stalemate could weaken Western support for Ukraine,” reported The New York Times last week.

make-believe.....

 

The make-believe industries

 

It is hard to know when “make-believe” became a brain-food for homo sapiens. From religions to quantum mechanics, there are many industries that profit from make-believe. Even Artificial Intelligence is entering the domain. The prehistory, the antiquity, the Middle-Ages and our modern era are full of make-believe stories that were devised four main purposes: control our behaviour, understand our world, record our past and entertain us. 

 

Shall we start with Quantum Mechanics.

Humans want to understand what we’re about. For yonks we believed the Earth was flat and this did not affect our survival. Understanding has nothing to do with survival. Natural survival can be brutal...

 

But for humans, life beyond survival needs stylistic explanations of why and how we’re going to survive — from the basic timber hut to bathing in luxury — from ignorance to understanding the mechanics of life via scientific explorations, and fudge our desires with artistic endeavours, that include politics and economics. 

The science of quantum mechanics is the closest we are from understanding the behaviour of matter and energy, though we’re still chasing the elusive dark matter and energy that corrupts our neat space/time mathematics…

Sciences and technologies have greatly enhanced our stylistics comforts. And by and large, despite being odd, the science of quantum mechanics works to provide concrete results with high degree of accuracy. Our systems and devices of communications are proof that understanding matter and energy in quantum mechanics is very very good.

 

One of our main make-believe activity is entertainment.

We have invented many devices, radio, newspapers, cinema, television and internet to provide information which, on the face of it, is entertainment with a dash of fake reality about any context. We’ve all [most of us] loved Bambi, the original, story and cried at the passing cruelty with a vision of hope. Disney was a master entertainer. As an aside, the Disney Corp is losing a bit of traction [profits] due to having gone into “politics” [woke]. Politics is the make-believe art of delegating our controls to artful-dodgers while demanding results in “human rights” freedom and our hip-pockets. This is also an area of make-believe: the entire economic system and the value of money. It’s the most flimsy structure and yet we have to trust this make-believe in order to improve — or at least maintain — our stylistic position…

everyday, the systems wobbles but we keep propping it up with hope.

 

For Gus, the most contentious make-believe art form is managing history.

The special dudes who tell us our history are historians. Why do we need to know our “history”? History tells us where we come from and the history tales are at the core of traditions and culture. History is based on “records”, story telling and religious affiliation. The “records” are an array of registered “fractals” — bits that create a general trend — down to a day to day, hour by hour, minute by minute defining moments. Over many years, historians have recorded the blows between kings and the famines of the revolutions. Census are also part of history…

History is never objective. Like the bible [a fiction story about god’s relations with the human-monkeys living on a small planet — insignificant to the universe] history is open to interpretations. 

 

Part of this record of history is THE NEWS, a daily venture in opinionated views, with talking heads, visual takes of events and “guilty buildings”… Guilty buildings are a journalistic device often used to switch shots, as well as “noddies” — when the questioner nods to an answer, usually shot after the interview in order to show the “reporter” paid attention, and so you should… but also because there is often only one camera to collect the pictures…

 

So, Interpretations of history can be wrong or biased through mistakes or deliberate purpose, such as motivating a country to love war by creating enemies. On the latter, Sarah Paine is going full-bore. 

This is why, as a “historian” she’s extremely dangerous…
