no german patriots — and philosophy as a weapon of war and peace....
Germany can’t provide Ukraine with any more US-made Patriot air defense systems because it would dangerously deplete its own stocks, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has said. In an interview with the newspaper Berliner Morgenpost published on Friday, Pistorius noted that Berlin had already delivered several Patriot systems and large numbers of guided missiles to Kiev. “We cannot provide any more at this moment,” the German defense chief stated, explaining that anything Germany supplied now would not be replaced “for the foreseeable future.” Pistorius urged other Western nations, whom he accused of having “contributed significantly less,” to step up deliveries of air defense systems to Ukraine. Pistorius had already warned in January that Germany could not send any more Patriot systems, saying it had already handed over more than a third of its capabilities to Ukraine. Germany, one of Kiev’s key Western backers, has launched a massive rearmament drive since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, with Chancellor Friedrich Merz setting the goal of building Europe’s strongest conventional army. Berlin has cited a perceived threat from Russia, while Moscow has repeatedly dismissed as “nonsense” claims that it intends to attack NATO. Apart from a shortage of Patriot air defense systems themselves, Ukraine has experienced significant shortages of modern PAC-3 missiles capable of intercepting ballistic rockets. The deficit intensified after Russia stepped up its long-range missile and drone strikes on military-related targets across Ukraine. Moscow has described its strikes as retaliation for Kiev’s UAV attacks on energy facilities and other civilian infrastructure inside Russia. Intercepting ballistic missiles can require launching two Patriot interceptors at a single target, with each missile costing between $3.5 and $5 million. Russia, meanwhile, has repeatedly launched large-scale strikes involving dozens of missiles and hundreds of drones. The US and its allies are also reportedly facing severe shortages of Patriot interceptors after Washington expended large quantities of air defense ammunition during its war against Iran earlier this year. The shortages have reportedly forced Washington to delay contracted deliveries of PAC-3 interceptors to some customers in Europe and Asia. Nevertheless, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has repeatedly demanded that Western backers provide Kiev with more interceptors. Late last month, Ukrainian Defense Minister Evgeny Khmara asked France, Germany, Italy, the UK, and Poland to donate 10% of their respective interceptor stockpiles to Kiev. However, the Netherlands and Poland had previously indicated that they had no Patriot missiles to spare, while other European countries are reportedly holding back their own PAC-3 reserves as well. Moscow has consistently denounced Western weapons deliveries to Ukraine, arguing that they only serve to unnecessarily prolong the bloodshed without changing the conflict’s ultimate outcome, while increasing the risk of a direct clash between Russia and NATO. https://rt-english.com/news/648549-germany-cant-spare-more-patriots-for-ukraine-defense-minister/

Ludwig Wittgenstein (born April 26, 1889, Vienna, Austria-Hungary [now in Austria]—died April 29, 1951, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England) was an Austrian-born British philosopher, regarded by many as the greatest philosopher of the 20th century. Wittgenstein’s two major works, Logisch-philosophische Abhandlung(1921; Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, 1922) and Philosophische Untersuchungen (published posthumously in 1953; Philosophical Investigations), have inspired a vast secondary literature and have done much to shape subsequent developments in philosophy, especially within the analytic tradition. His charismatic personality has, in addition, exerted a powerful fascination upon artists, playwrights, poets, novelists, musicians, and even filmmakers, so that his fame has spread far beyond the confines of academic life. SEE ALSO: Adolf Hitler is sometimes thought of as simply a thug, but he claimed that reading Fichte, Nietzsche, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Darwin, and Heidegger “provided the building materials and plans for the future . . . and a philosophy which became the granite foundation of all my later acts.” In an important new book, Hitler’s Philosophers, Yvonne Sherratt examines Hitler’s vulgarization of various modern philosophers and the distinguished academics who supported the Führer and National Socialism. To rationalize his warped Weltanschauung (“worldview”) Hitler cherry-picked from the writings of his philosophical heroes. His one-time friend, Ernst Hanfstaengl, said Hitler “was not so much a distiller as a bartender of genius. He took all the ingredients the German [tradition] offered him and mixed them through his private alchemy into a cocktail they wanted to drink.” From Nietzsche, Hitler learned to hate democracy because it “encouraged mediocrity.” He admired Nietzsche’s warrior spirit and call for violence to achieve political ends: “Brutality is respectful. . . . Terrorism is absolutely indispensable in every case of the founding of a new power.” He adopted Nietzsche’s idea that “a culture [must] encourage not equality but greatness” and “create conditions that require stronger men.” Hitler sought to breed Aryan supermen who would rule the world. Hitler took from Hegel the notions that the state has supreme power over the individual and that historic progress demands conflict. Hitler believed that Hegel’s “force within history” applied to the German people, and he justified “an invasion of Europe using Hegel’s historic ideas of ‘coming into being.’” Hitler embraced Kant because he concluded “the greatest service Kant has rendered to us. . .[was] the complete refutation of the teachings which were the heritage of the middle ages and of the dogmatic philosophy of the [Catholic] church.” Hitler was also attracted to Kant’s view that Judaism was superstitious and irrational: “the Jewish religion is not really a religion at all, but merely a community of a mass of men of one tribe.” Sherratt points out that Kant “decreed in fact that pure morality sought ‘the euthanasia of Judaism.’” From Fichte, Hitler learned of German exceptionalism and nationalism and agreed with Fichte’s declaration, “I see absolutely no way of giving Jews civic rights.” https://www.thecatholicthing.org/2013/06/12/hitlers-philosophical-enablers/

party of peace....
Jeffrey D. Sachs
Democrats, please take note: peace is good politicsFrom Washington to Jerusalem to Berlin, electorates are punishing leaders who prolong conflict. Jeffrey Sachs argues the Democrats must heed the lesson, and become the party of peace.
The message of voters is the same everywhere: diplomacy is safer, more effective, and trillions of dollars cheaper than war.
Voters across the United States were loud and clear on Tuesday in their historic drubbing of Trumpism. The election was a decisive rejection of Trump’s war on Iran and its staggering costs at home. While savouring their victory and the historic opportunity to restore America’s constitutional order, the Democrats should take the anti-war message of the election to heart, because they suffered the same verdict two years ago, when voters rejected the Biden administration’s wars in Ukraine and Gaza. Last week Israeli voters rejected Netanyahu’s reckless wars, and European voters are also rejecting parties that prolong the Ukraine War. The message of voters is the same everywhere: diplomacy is safer, more effective, and trillions of dollars cheaper than war.
On election night Trump conceded to Fox News, “I think a part of it was Iran.” The next day Vice President JD Vance was far blunter, posting on X: “The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night…. everyone knows why we lost.” In the AP Voter Poll, about 60 per cent of voters said the decision to use military force against Iran was wrong, and about 90 per cent called the cost of living a crucial or major factor in their vote.
The war and the cost of living were of course utterly intertwined. Gasoline prices, around $2.80 per gallon before the war began on 28 February, had risen by about 55 per cent by mid-May and reached a monthly average of $4.43 in September. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed from below 4 per cent before the war to above 5 per cent in the autumn, and the Pentagon sought more than $200 billion in supplemental war funding. Every family with a mortgage, a car loan or a credit card balance suffered from the war.
Voters everywhere are sending the same message: peace through diplomacy.
The first duty of the new Congress is to restore its constitutional authority over war and its power of the purse to ensure that US forces are not sent back into combat in Iran or anywhere else on the whim of a president and the behest of domestic or foreign lobbies. Trump must of course refrain from restarting the war, which was never remotely necessary or justified. Remember that on 28 February, the day the US and Israel launched the war, Oman’s foreign minister, who was mediating the US-Iran talks, had said that a deal was within reach.
The Democrats should not imagine that the anti-war lesson applies only to Republicans. Kamala Harris lost in 2024 because voters held the Biden administration responsible for the costs of its own wars. The energy shock that followed the escalation of the Ukraine war in 2022 drove up inflation, and gasoline topped $5 per gallon for the first time in June 2022. Biden twice rejected negotiations that could have ended the conflict: in December 2021, when his administration refused to negotiate on NATO enlargement in response to Russia’s draft security treaty, and in April 2022, when the Istanbul talks were abandoned at the behest of the US and UK.
The Gaza genocide also cost the Democrats directly. Among Americans who voted for Joe Biden in 2020 but not for Harris in 2024, 29 per cent named ending Israel’s violence in Gaza as the main factor in their decision. The party’s voters have moved far ahead of its leaders. A New York Times/Siena poll in May 2026 found that roughly three-quarters of Democratic voters oppose US military and economic assistance to Israel.
Voters everywhere are sending the same message: peace through diplomacy. On 27 October, after Israeli wars in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran, Netanyahu lost his majority. Similarly, European leaders who have tied themselves to open-ended war in Ukraine are being rejected by the voters. Only 10 per cent of Germans are satisfied with Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the lowest rating ever recorded for a German chancellor. Emmanuel Macron’s approval fell to 15 per cent in October. In Bulgaria, Iliana Iotova, who favours dialogue with Moscow, won the presidency on 1 November with more than 58 per cent of the vote.
A key upcoming test for the Democrats will be Ukraine. They must stop their party’s typical Russia-bashing and instead support a diplomatic end to the war.
As a start, the Democrats should remember why the war started. In 1990 the United States assured Mikhail Gorbachev that NATO would not move “one inch eastward”. The Clinton administration broke that promise. In 2008 the Bush administration pushed through the Bucharest declaration that Ukraine and Georgia “will become members of NATO”, despite Ambassador William Burns’s warning that this was the brightest of all red lines for Russia. In 2014 the United States backed the coup against Ukraine’s elected president, Viktor Yanukovych, as the leaked Nuland-Pyatt call made clear. In April 2022, when negotiators in Istanbul came close to a peace agreement based on Ukrainian neutrality, the US and UK actually intervened to block the agreement. Today 75 per cent of Ukrainians support negotiations with Russia to end the war.
The Democrats should not mistake their victory for a mandate to pursue their own wars.
In view of these causes of the war, I have recently set out a straightforward diplomatic framework for peace in Ukraine that would end the war. NATO would end its eastward expansion. Ukraine would adopt permanent neutrality on the model of Austria in 1955. An armistice line would be drawn, with both sides renouncing the use of force to change it. Ukraine would pursue membership in the European Union as a permanently neutral state. The Democrats should support such a diplomatic approach. It’s what can end the war, save Ukraine, and win the backing of both the Ukrainian and American people.
Most importantly, the Democrats should not mistake their victory for a mandate to pursue their own wars. The new Democratic majority should quickly reassert the constitutional authority of Congress over war and peace, champion a negotiated peace in Ukraine, end support for Israel’s wars, cut the military budget, and redirect the savings toward lowering the cost of living and repairing the public finances.
These positions are not only right but are good politics. For the Democrats to win the White House in 2028, they should become the party of peace. Better yet, both parties should become parties of peace and conduct the 2028 campaign on which party will best address America’s needs for decent jobs, affordability, healthcare, housing, a safe environment, and quality education.
