It's obvious who's the boss, and her nationality

 

When David Flint asserts that the Queen is not a foreign national (Letters, June 16), is he claiming that she is Australian? If so, I would be interested to see her birth certificate. I'm not unreasonable - I'll accept the short form.

Here we go again with David Flint assuring us fact is not fact. The truth is the Queen is our head of state. Our constitution provides for a governor-general to be appointed by the Queen to be her representative in the Commonwealth, and shall have and may exercise in the Commonwealth during the Queen's pleasure - but subject to the constitution - such powers and functions of the Queen as Her Majesty may be pleased to assign. That puts it beyond doubt about who is boss.

As for the Queen not being a foreign national, well she is the Queen of England, she is English and she does live in England. This tends to make it very hard to argue she is not a foreign national when viewed from Australia.

State of the nation

Bill Hayden is not ''an avowed republican'' (Letters, June 15). The Queen is not a ''foreign national''.

As for who is ''head of state'', the High Court consisting of founding fathers declared in 1907, unanimously, that the king is sovereign, and the governor-general be ''constitutional head of the Commonwealth". "Head of state" is a diplomatic term governed by international law. As such, there is no doubt that the Governor-General is head of state.

------------------------Yes David,...and the Queen of England is ... the queen of England. When will you become aware of the nonsensical farce that inhabits inside your royalist head? When will you start understanding that what you've just expressed in defense of the royalty makes the royalty redundant? The Governor General being the head the state? Excellent! We don't need the queen anymore.

The Queen's finances are at a "historic low" with just £1 million ($1.9 million) left in reserve, British MPs have been told.

Her courtiers have been advised to take money-saving tips from the Treasury.

A report by the Public Accounts Committee found that the Queen's advisers were failing to control her finances while the royal palaces were "crumbling".

MPs said her advisers had overspent to such an extent that her reserve fund had fallen from £35 million in 2001 to just £1 million today.

The Queen was once thought of as one of the world's wealthiest women. But no longer. L'Oreal and Wal-Mart heiresses, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and Australia's own Gina Rinehart now top those lists with the Head of the Commonwealth nowhere in sight. 

The royal household had made efficiency savings of just 5 per cent over the past five years compared with British government departments, that are cutting their budgets by up to a third.

MPs on the committee said the Treasury must "get a grip" and help to protect the royal palaces from "further damage and deterioration".
