mr detritus double-speaks

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has talked up the Australian economy while visiting the New York Stock Exchange, despite his recent gloomy assessments of it.
His comments have drawn ire from Treasurer Wayne Swan, who asked: "Why does Tony's tune on the Australian economy change so much when he changes time zones?"

Why does he find it so hard to repeat the same facts that make our economy the envy of the world when he's talking to Australians?

Before his visit to the US, Mr Abbott had argued that Australia's economy was in a perilous position and that this was the "worst possible" time to have introduced a carbon tax.
But Mr Abbott, who last month played down Australia's strong growth figures, told reporters today that it had some "fundamental strengths".
"We have an abundance of natural resources, we have a stable political system and we have talented and creative people," he said.
But despite saying he had not travelled overseas to "fight the political battles of back home", Mr Abbott could not resist a dig at the Gillard government.
"Obviously there are some question marks about government policy," he said of Australia's economy.
"There's no doubt [that] we have some fundamental strengths, but as I keep pointing out, they owe far more to the reforms of previous governments than they do to the spending spree of the current one."
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Julia Gillard accused Mr Abbott of trashing Australia's security credentials during a speech to the Heritage Foundation in Washington.
