Russia’s envoy to NATO has vowed a “totally asymmetrical” response if the alliance stands by a plan to deploy new armored units to Eastern Europe. Citing Russian “aggression” as a pretext, the US has announced “continuous troop rotations” starting 2017.

“We are not passive observers, we consistently take all the military measures we consider necessary in order to counterbalance this reinforced presence that is not justified by anything,” Moscow’s permanent representative at the alliance, Aleksandr Grushko, said in an interview with TV channel Russia-24 on Wednesday. “Certainly, we’ll respond totally asymmetrically.”

Grushko did not elaborate on his statement, but said Russia’s actions would correspond to its “understanding of the extent of the military threat, would not be extremely expensive, but also highly effective.”

“As of today, assessing as a whole what that the US and NATO are doing, the point at issue is a substantial change for the worse in the security situation,” he said.

The comments from Russia’s NATO envoy came shortly after the Pentagon announced a plan to increase its troop presence in “the European theater” of up to three fully-manned Army brigades by the end of 2017, one armored, one airborne and one Stryker brigade.

The Russian envoy also addressed reports of Breedlove’s suggestion to resume surveillance flights of U-2 jets over Europe, presumably on the borders of the Baltic states.

Speaking of “the strategic threat presented by Putin’s Russia,” Breedlove reportedly said that “EUCOM needs additional intelligence collection platforms, such as the U-2 or the RC-135, to assist the increased collection requirements in the theatre.”

While Grushko has not ruled out such jets being used over regions bordering Russia, he sees undertones of propaganda in the reports rather than a real threat.

“It seems to me that these [reports on potential resumption of flights by US reconnaissance planes] are nothing more than another propaganda volley, but made with an intent,” Grushko said. “Reconnaissance aircraft will not fly over Russia.”

In this regard, he cited another example of the West’s purposeful anti-Russia rhetoric which has spread throughout the media.

The U-2 spy plane, one of the most emblematic aircraft of the Cold War, should return to Europe to conduct surveillance on a resurgent and aggressive Russia, a top American general has warned.

General Philip Breedlove, the head of US forces in Europe and Nato’s supreme allied commander, said the iconic jet was among “additional intelligence collection platforms” needed to effectively counter an increased threat posed by Moscow after decades of downgrading of American military assets in the region. The officer, who is due to step down this spring, said Russia poses a “long-term existential threat” to the United States.

With sensors that can spot a landmine from a height of 13 miles and scoop up vast amounts of communications data, the U-2 would prove a potent tool in monitoring any build-up or sudden movement of Russian forces on the border of the Baltic states or the Ukraine.

Britain responds to threat from Russians by beefing up Royal Navy

But the suggested return to European skies of the slender espionage plane, which first flew six decades ago and has survived several attempts to force its retirement, could also risk provoking Russian ire by resurrecting memories of the U-2’s role in the most incendiary moments of the Cold War.

In 1960, a U-2 on a spy mission over Russia was downed by a surface-to-air missile and its CIA pilot, Gary Powers, held captive for two years as Moscow successfully embarrassed Washington over its claims that the plane had been on a mission monitoring weather patterns.

In reality, Powers had been sent to spy on military installations and his capture undermined a major peace summit as well as causing the withdrawal of an invitation for then President Dwight Eisenhower to visit Moscow.

And our idiotic MMMM (mediocre mass media de mierda) purrs over the visit of Obama to mother Pom as he and wife talk "to the most powerful two year old in the world"... Idiots.

As well, according to other sources, more than one million (about 1.7 million) Syrians have returned home after the Syrian government cleaned up the place of terrorists. Happy people? Sure.  Ah I see, this is what all this is about. Obama did not want them to return to their homeland until there had been a regime change.

Meanwhile our MMMM (mediocre mass media de mierda) won't tell you anything about the negotiations between Russia, the Syrian government, the US and "their" rebels, which are stuck because despite the Russians and the Syrian government having made reasonable offers, the US is still petulant about what IT WANTS — which is not what THE PEOPLE WANT.

harry has not read the BIG print...

Tensions between the UK and Russia have been high since the poisoning of former GRU operative Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury last March, which London was quick to blame on Moscow without providing any proof.

Prince Harry will take part in one of Britain’s biggest 12-week long war games against a Russian invasion, The Mirror reported, citing military and Rroyal sources.

Although the 34-year-old Duke of Sussex left the Armed Forces in June 2015, he will join some 1,000 Marines in Norway in order to “protect” Europe’s northern flank in the event of military strikes by Moscow, the media outlet wrote.

“Prince Harry will be totally immersed in the exercise, and he will be privy to top-secret battle plans. It will be high-tempo, extremely realistic and his involvement is good news for the Marines, who will see his involvement as a very positive message of encouragement to the Corps. They are the main force who will protect Europe’s northern flank in the event of a conflict, the tip of the spear, and it is important Harry is among the troops”, a senior military source told publication.

Prince Harry, who served in Afghanistan, reportedly told his confidants that he was thrilled to be back in the military fold:

“The duke is relishing his role with the Royal Marines and taking it extremely seriously. His grandfather Prince Philip carried out his duty with the Marines with such distinction, which Harry particularly admired. Throughout his military career, Harry always had the greatest of respect and admiration for the Marines and he has always been fascinated by their valour and courage”, a Royal insider said.

The Royal Marines left for Norway on New Year’s Day from their base at Bickleigh Barracks in Devon. According to the media outlet, 8,000 troops will be involved in the exercise, including soldiers from Europe and the US.

British ground forces would be "comprehensively outgunned" in a conflict with Russia in Eastern Europe, according to a defence think-tank.

Research by the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi) found that the Army, as well as Nato allies, has a "critical shortage" of artillery and ammunition.

It concluded that it could not maintain a credible defence position.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the UK works closely with Nato and is "well equipped to take on a leading role".

The research comes ahead of a meeting of Nato leaders in London next week to mark the 70th anniversary of the alliance.

The UK, along with other Nato members, has positioned military forces in Eastern Europe to deter any potential Russian aggression in the wake of Moscow's annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Around 800 British troops are currently stationed in Estonia. The first were sent in 2017.
