jones' reef

Can you discuss conservation of the Great Barrier Reef without talking about climate change? Alan Jones thinks so, and that a $1 million website is the best way to do it.

Jones, one of Australia’s most prominent climate change sceptics, said he was on the reef to “deny the [climate] armageddonists the opportunity to badmouth Australia to the world and to paint Australia and Australians and Australian governments as environmental vandals by arguing that the reef is dead or dying”.

Jones said “climate alarm evangelists” were failing to present the reality of the reef.

This year has been one of the worst on record for the reef, with a massive coral bleaching episode affecting 93% of reefs surveyed, killing almost a quarter of them. An Australian government “report card” recently gave the reef a D for the fifth year in a row.

This morning on his show, Jones interviewed Emmy-winning reef cinematographer and marine biologist Richard Fitzpatrick from James Cook University. These are some of the hard-hitting questions Jones asked, along with some things that scientists have been saying about the reef for months.

pain is only an illusion, like anthopogenic global warming...

Outspoken broadcaster Alan Jones will be forced off-air indefinitely for major back surgery, sparking concerns by colleagues over his recent run of ill health.

The top-rating breakfast presenter and TV host, who is reliant on a walking stick, told staff at Sydney station 2GB that he will take indefinite leave from November 21 to be "sliced and diced" by doctors. "I have had all sorts of problems for a lot of years and it's just got hopeless at the moment," he said.

Yes Alan when the pain gets too much, something has got to be done about it... It's like global warming. Something urgent has to be done about it: simple. stop CO2 emissions forthwith.

There is a furphy of "negative emissions" which are accounted for by the international community... This is the pluck in the air possibility that technologies in the future will allow us to sequester CO2... Already accounted for in our mitigation. Iit's pie in the sky. We are in trouble. GLOBAL WARMING IS REAL.

Anyway, have a good recovery. Unfortunately it will take thousands of years to recover from the present human induced global warming. We'll all be dead by then, but future generations will hate our guts — especially yours, for being a denialist.

worse and improvements...

Queensland scientists have confirmed this year's mass coral bleaching event has resulted in the largest die-off of corals ever recorded on the Great Barrier Reef, while some tourist areas showed remarkable improvement.

James Cook University researchers estimate two-thirds of coral coverage has died along a 700-kilometre stretch of reef off far north Queensland, north of Port Douglas.

While the northern reef struggled, there was good news for southern parts of the reef, which includes major tourist areas around Cairns and the Whitsundays.
