record-breaking heat worldwide... you're allowed to panic...

panic

1. 2016 was the hottest year on record globally for the third year in a row. Climate change was the dominant factor in driving the record-breaking heat worldwide.
  • The global average temperature for 2016 was 0.94°C above the 20th century average, overtaking the previous record set in 2015 by 0.04°C.
  • The record global warmth of 2016 is part of a longterm trend. All of the world’s 10 warmest years have occurred since 1998. 2016 is the 40th consecutive year with above-average global temperatures.
  • No one aged under 40 has lived in a year with global average temperatures at or below the global 20th century average.

2. Climate change is worsening heat-related extreme weather conditions in Australia.
  • Autumn 2016 was Australia’s warmest on record and Perth had more 40°C days in the 2015/2016 summer than ever before.
  • Eight of the ten hottest years on record in Australia have occurred within the past two decades.
  • Averaged across Australia, temperatures for 10 of the 12 months of 2016 were above-average.
  • Ocean temperatures around Australia were record-breaking in 2016, 0.73 °C above average (1961-1990).

3. Increasing extreme heat is damaging to human health, our economy and the environment.
  • 2016’s extremely warm temperatures drove dramatic and unprecedented climate impacts, including the worst coral bleaching event in the Great Barrier Reef’s history, an unparalleled largescale mangrove dieback in northern Australia and a major algae bloom in the Murray River.
  • Climate change made the bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef 175 times more likely.
  • Increased temperatures driven by climate change are increasing the risk of heatwaves, bushfires and drought in Australia.
4. Record temperatures across many regions of the world are strongly influenced by climate change.
  • Eight months in 2016 broke global heat records, with March 2016 setting the highest departure from average for any month since records began in 1880.
  • An unprecedented sixteen months in a row of record monthly temperatures broke global records between May 2015 and August 2016.
  • The emission of greenhouse gases is driving record global heat. Countries including Australia must drastically reduce their emissions from coal, oil and gas to slow and then halt the escalating impacts of extreme heat.
  • We are rapidly closing the window of opportunity to limit warming to 2°C above pre-industrial levels – this is the “guardrail” temperature referred to in the Paris Agreement to stabilise the climate and limit the catastrophic impacts of climate change.

james packer and the warming planet...

Before the Flood is a 2016 documentary film about climate change directed by Fisher Stevens. The film was produced as a collaboration between Stevens, Leonardo DiCaprioJames PackerBrett Ratner, Trevor Davidoski, and Jennifer Davisson Killoran. Martin Scorsese is an executive producer.[2]

As revealed by DiCaprio on September 9, 2016 at the Toronto International Film Festival, the documentary has debuted October 30, 2016 on the National Geographic Channel.[3][4] As part of National Geographic's commitment to covering climate change, the documentary was made widely available and free of charge on various platforms.

on track...

Sydney is heading for its hottest ever January for overnight temperatures with little sign the unusual warmth across eastern Australia is about to lose its grip.

Temperatures are forecast to nudge or exceed 40 degrees on Tuesday, with Richmond tipped to reach 41 degrees. The town on Sydney's north-west has already had a record-equalling five days above 40 degrees this month.

Meanwhile in Moree...

As the mercury soars in Sydney today, spare a thought for the people of Moree in northern New South Wales, who are in the midst of a record-breaking heatwave.

Key points:
  • The temperature has exceeded 35C in Moree for the past 27 days
  • It is a NSW record, with the previous benchmark being 17 days
  • The mercury is expected to top 40C in western Sydney today

The town's 2,000 residents have sweltered through 27 consecutive days where the temperature has exceeded 35 degrees Celsius — a state record.

The previous benchmark was 17 days, and the bad news is, there is no respite in sight.

Rob Taggart from the Bureau of Meteorology said the string of sweaty weather in Moree was unprecedented, even for summer.

"This is unheard of," he said.

"The previous record was 17 days in a row of 35 degrees or more and that was set in the summer of '81 and '82.

"This new sequence of 27 consecutive days has smashed the previous record.

"We're also forecasting 35 degrees out at Moree for the remainder of the week so it looks like this new record will run out to 34 days in a row."

A hot day is forecast for Sydney, with a top of 38C on the coast and 40C in the west, although a cool change will come with showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

time for trump to be properly briefed about global warming...

A US national park has deleted several tweets on climate change statistics from its official Twitter account hours after posting them.

The tweets from Badlands National Park follow several gag orders and suspensions on US federal agencies by President Donald Trump's new administration.

The national park in South Dakota addressed issues such as carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and ocean acidity in the tweets.

"Today, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is higher than at any time in the last 650,000 years," one tweet said.

slowly inexorably...

Global warming is pumping mad... the feedback mechanisms are forcing some events that on their own would not qualify as being part of global warming but together they are strong indicators of the process. Sydney and the lower east coast of Australia is experiencing a cold wave. It's 12 degrees and it feels like 8 degrees Celsius at midday. It's a high pressure system bringing in the cold from Antarctica via the upper atmosphere and "falling down" so to speak. Meanwhile there has been some record flooding in Berlin and Moscow. Other "global warming disturbances" could be catalogued here, but we'll only mention this one:

The Iranian city of Ahvaz shattered national regional temperatures records on Thursday when the heat rose to 128.7 degrees Fahrenheit, the hottest in Iran’s history. The temperature was also a record for June heat in the Asian mainland.

Some reports put the temperature at 129.2 degrees Fahrenheit, which, if, true, would tie the record for hottest temperature recorded in modern times, outdone only by the 134 degrees Fahrenheit recorded in Death Valley, California, in 1913. And some experts today doubt that reading, according to USA Today.

In 2016, Weather Underground weather historian Christopher Burt said such an incredible temperature was "not possible from a meteorological perspective."

MeteoFrance meteorologist Etienne Kapikian wrote on Twitter that the heat was a "new absolute national record of reliable Iranian heat."

The Weather Underground reports that Ahvaz hit 129.2 degrees, which would have felt like 142 degrees after factoring in humidity.

Across the ocean last week, American Airlines had to cancel 45 flights out of Phoenix when temperatures began approaching record temperatures of more than 120 degrees.
