United States President Donald Trump has appointed Lieutenant General Herbert Raymond McMaster as his new national security adviser.

Key points:
  • General HR McMaster will replace disgraced former national security adviser Michael Flynn
  • The highly regarded military tactician is known for questioning authority
  • Acting adviser General Keith Kellogg to serve as national security council chief of staff

Mr Trump continued to make key appointments in unconventional ways, performing the announcement from a luxurious living room at his Palm Beach club Mar-a-Lago.

He had been looking for a replacement for Michael Flynn, who resigned in disgrace after lying to the White House about his conversations with Russia.

"He is highly respected by everybody in the military and we're very honoured to have him," Mr Trump said of General McMaster.

"He's a man of tremendous talent and tremendous experience."

General McMaster is a highly regarded military tactician and strategic thinker, but his selection surprised some observers who wondered how the General, who is known for questioning authority, would deal with a White House that has not welcomed criticism.

He wrote a book critical of US generals for not taking a tougher line with their political masters during the Vietnam War.

a privilege...

McMaster, 54, is a decorated career officer in the Army who holds a Ph.D in military history. He authored a critical book about the Vietnam War called “Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies That Led to Vietnam.”

McMaster called his new position a “privilege.”

“I look forward to joining the national security team and doing everything I can to advance and protect the interests of the American people,” McMaster said.

Kellogg, 72, praised McMaster as a “great statesman” and a “great soldier.”

Trump asked for Flynn’s resignation a week ago, after he misinformed Vice President Mike Pence about his conversations with the Russian ambassador about US sanctions.

Asked if Pence played a role in making McMaster National Security Advisor, Trump told reporters: “He did.”

from bad to worst...

US President Donald Trump has announced former UN ambassador John Bolton will take over as national security adviser, replacing HR McMaster.

Mr Trump announced in a tweet he was ousting Mr McMaster for Mr Bolton, who has advocated using military force against Iran and North Korea, and has taken a hard line against Russia.

Mr Bolton, 69, who has long been a polarising figure in Washington foreign policy circles, will become Mr Trump's third national security adviser in 14 months.

As the State Department's top arms control official under former president George W Bush, Mr Bolton was a leading advocate of the 2003 invasion of Iraq — which was later found to have been based on bogus and exaggerated intelligence about president Saddam Hussein's weapons arsenal and ties to terrorism.

Mr Trump tweeted that Mr McMaster has done "an outstanding job and will always remain my friend".

He said Mr Bolton would take over on April 9.
