Recent revelations have proved Russia had no choice but to extinguish the growing threat within Ukraine.

“We have been left no other option to protect Russia and our people but for the one that we will be forced to use today,” Russian President Vladimir Putin noted solemnly during his announcement of a special military operation in the Donbass. “The situation requires us to take decisive and immediate action.”

“The course of events and the incoming information show that Russia’s clash with these forces is inevitable,” the president stressed.

Two years later, as Kiev’s bombs fall on Russian civilians and the US Central Intelligence Agency boasts of a 10-year presence in Ukraine, the wisdom of Putin’s response is clear according to security analyst Mark Sleboda.

 

“We just had over the weekend an extensive article in The New York Times about how involved the CIA has been for the last decade and is involved in this conflict in secret bunkers on the Russian border from which they are directing attacks into Russia,” said Sleboda on Sputnik’s Fault Lines program on Monday. “You know, far more than just passive intelligence.”

 

“This is coordination, and this is openly admitted,” added the international relations expert, claiming the story proved the West’s plot to destroy Russia.

The New York Times’ reporting emphasized that Putin was well aware of Western intelligence agencies’ efforts to provoke aggression against Russia, Sleboda noted.

“Toward the end of 2021, according to a senior European official, Mr. Putin was weighing whether to launch a full scale invasion [of Ukraine],” read the article in the prominent US newspaper. “He met with the head of one of Russia's main spy services, who told him that the CIA, together with Britain's MI6, were controlling Ukraine and turning it into a beachhead for operations against Moscow,” the NYT claimed.

 

"And when this conflict ends, whatever Ukraine is, is still left, right, under the control of the Maidan regime installed by the West will continue that beachhead operation against Moscow. So literally, whether they would want to stop earlier, which I certainly believe they do. Right. They didn't want to launch this to begin with, but in order to stop NATO operations out of Ukraine, they will eventually have to take probably the whole thing," Sleboda highlighted.

 

Sleboda commented on the surprising candor of the reporting. “If they're admitting all of this, you have to ask why,” he said, claiming the revelation was made “because they plan further escalation and they've got to come out in front about how involved they have been at this point in directing this whole war in order to move to escalate even further.”

Western countries have repeatedly attempted to portray the Donbass conflict as a result of Russian aggression, variously claiming Putin intends to reassemble the Soviet Union or even push further West to attack NATO countries.

The narrative has been undermined as a series of inconvenient details have been leaked to the press. In 2022 it was revealed the Biden administration intervened to stop negotiations intended to end the conflict, acting through then-UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to end peace talks.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett made similar claims last year, claiming the West “blocked” prospects for a ceasefire emanating from separate discussions.

Sleboda said the extent of US interference in Ukraine was fully revealed in order to get ahead of any further leaks as Western countries double down on efforts to harm Russia. Host Jamarl Thomas agreed with the assessment, noting the revelations prove that “what Putin was saying was right.”

Meanwhile, the Kiev regime has launched terrorist attacks on Russian civilians in recent months, likely attempting to bait the country into a response that can be used to justify further Western involvement.

 

The city of Kharkov has been a crucial beachhead for such provocations. “People are desperately trying to sell their property there [in Kharkov] right now,” noted Sleboda.

 

“They're getting less than 10% of the value for it because they know that the conflict is coming to Kharkov and that the Kiev regime itself made that inevitable by conducting these cross-border raids with these neo-Nazi formations and the missile strikes, and also the shooting down of the Russian transport plane with the Ukrainian POWs above Belgorod,” the analyst explained.

 

“These attacks across the border into Belgorod have made it an imperative for Russia to deal with Kharkov,” the analyst emphasized. After Moscow seizes this important city, the second-most populous in all of Ukraine, Sleboda predicted Russian troops would be forced to continue to move towards Kiev as the West uses the remnants of the Ukrainian rump state to further antagonize Russia.

US President Joe Biden made the United States’ hostility to Putin clear in a remarkable moment of candor in 2022, when he defiantly proclaimed the Russian president “cannot remain in power.” But as America presides over unpopular proxy wars in the Donbass and Gaza and an increasingly dysfunctional and discredited political system at home, collapse may be more likely in Washington than Moscow.

“An empire always thinks that it can allow itself to make some little mistakes, take some extra costs, because its power is such that they don't mean anything,” said Putin in 2018, claiming the United States was committing errors “typical of an empire.” “But the quantity of those costs, those mistakes, inevitably grows. And the moment comes when it can't handle them, neither in the security sphere or the economic sphere.”

 

“Thank God this situation of a unipolar world, of a monopoly, is coming to an end,” the Russian president stressed. “It's practically already over,” he emphasized.

French President Emmanual Macron has argued that deployments of troops to Ukraine by NATO members and other allies cannot be ruled out because Western powers must stop at nothing to ensure that Russia does not defeat Kiev’s forces.

“There’s no consensus today to send, in an official manner, troops on the ground,” Macron told reporters after hosting a meeting of European leaders on Monday in Paris. “But in terms of dynamics, we cannot exclude anything. We will do everything necessary to prevent Russia from winning this war.”

France hosted Monday’s summit of Ukraine backers to demonstrate steadfast support and European unity amid concerns that US aid to Kiev may stop, especially if Donald Trump wins this year’s presidential election. Macron said that while Ukraine’s European allies want to avoid escalating the conflict into a direct war with Russia, they agree that they must do more to ensure that Moscow doesn’t win.

We have to take stock of the situation and realize our collective security is at stake,” the French leader said. “We have to ratchet up. Russia must not win, not only for Ukraine, but secondly, we are, by doing so, ensuring our collective security for today and for the future.”

Macron noted that the allies who say “never, ever” today about direct troop deployments to Ukraine are the same ones that previously ruled out escalations of military aid that were later granted, including long-range missiles and fighter jets. “Two years ago, a lot around this table said that we will offer helmets and sleeping bags, and now they’re saying we need to do more to get missiles and tanks to Ukraine. We have to be humble and realize that we’ve always been six to eight months late, so we’ll do what is needed to achieve our aim.”

There is broad consensus among the nations represented at Monday’s meeting that the allies must provide more aid to Ukraine and step up more quickly, Macron claimed. “We are not at war with the Russian people, but we cannot let them win in Ukraine,” he said, adding, “We are determined to do everything necessary for as long as necessary. That is the key takeaway from this evening.”

Washington ran out of money for Ukraine last month, after burning through $113 billion in congressionally approved aid packages. US President Joe Biden is seeking an additional $60 billion in Ukraine funding as part of an emergency spending bill that also includes aid for Israel and Taiwan. Conservative Republican lawmakers have balked at approving more aid for Ukraine, saying Biden is merely prolonging the conflict without changing its outcome. Trump has claimed he will end the crisis within 24 hours by forcing Ukrainian and Russian leaders to the negotiating table.

European Union (EU) heads of state gathered in Paris Monday for a summit on the NATO war with Russia in Ukraine. Facing the imminent collapse of NATO’s Ukrainian proxy forces amid massive losses, the summit was called to lay the groundwork for the introduction of troops from NATO and EU member countries to fight Russia in Ukraine.

Before the summit, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico warned, “NATO and EU member states are considering that they will send their troops to Ukraine on a bilateral basis.” He added, “I cannot say for what purpose.”

These warnings were confirmed by French President Emmanuel Macron, who declared that the deployment of troops from NATO members was “not excluded.”

Last night Macron said that “everything is possible” to prevent Russian victory in Ukraine, and that individual European countries sending troops to Ukraine is “not excluded.” 

He pledged to give Ukraine “medium- and long-range missiles and bombs” for use against Russia. That is, Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and other top EU officials agreed to the framework for a full-scale EU-NATO war against Russia.

The statements of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who spoke to the Paris conference via video link, epitomize the official lying aiming to obscure the catastrophic implications of this EU-NATO escalation. “31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died in this war,” Zelensky claimed. “Not 300,000 or 150,000, or whatever Putin and his lying circle are saying. But each of these losses is a great loss for us.”

Zelensky’s statement exposes his contempt for the Ukrainian people, who know he is lying. If the NATO powers are now advocating sending their own troops to the battlefield, it is because so many Ukrainian soliders have been killed that the Ukrainian army has run out of manpower.

In November 2022, US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley said 100,000 Ukrainian troops had been killed or wounded, though the New York Times wrote that “officials said privately the numbers were closer to 120,000.” Last August, the Times cited US officials claiming Ukraine had lost 70,000 killed and 120,000 wounded.

US officials critical of the Ukraine war and with access to classified intelligence reports said these August 2023 figures in fact understated Ukrainian losses, so as to limit opposition to the war.

US Colonel Douglas Macgregor said, “The Ukrainians now we think have lost 400,000 men killed in battle. We were talking about 300,000-350,000 a few months ago. Within the last month of this supposed counteroffensive which was to sweep the battlefield, they lost at least 40,000 killed.”

Ukrainian casualties today are far higher than they were last August. Indeed, Ukraine’s failed “counteroffensive”—which involved throwing troops against well-prepared Russian fortifications backed by mines, heavy artillery and drones—was not called off until November. Ukrainian forces have since suffered catastrophic defeats all along the front line, most recently abandoning Avdeevka amid reports they were suffering 1,500 casualties per day.

A recent Washington Post report on the Ukrainian front found several infantry battalions with only 40 of 200 men left. One battalion commander warned the Post, “the front will collapse somewhere.”

Ukraine’s catastrophic casualties are a warning: Other European countries will also take horrific losses if they wage war on Russia. It is worth recalling the September 2023 study in the US Army War College Quarterly, which called on the United States to reinstate the draft, to be able to absorb the losses it would suffer in a coming war with Russia. It projected that the US Army would take 3,600 casualties per day, or 1.3 million per year, in a war with Russia.

Moreover, the deaths and casualties will not be confined to the battlefield. The direct introduction of NATO forces into the war against Russia would almost certainly escalate into a nuclear conflict, with deaths and casualties running into the tens and hundreds of millions.

If Zelensky lies so brazenly about the number of war dead, what else are he and his NATO allies lying about? The answer is: everything. 

The entire narrative the NATO powers have concocted around the Ukraine war, to justify plans for military escalation worked out behind the backs of the population, is a tissue of lies that must be rejected. Workers and youth must instead be politically mobilized to stop the war.

US and European ruling circles lie relentlessly about the origin of the Ukraine war, claiming it was unprovoked Russian aggression. But this weekend, the New York Times, to justify its call to vote for a $60 billion military aid package to Ukraine in the US Congress, published an article detailing how Ukraine is a valuable asset for CIA spying and assassination programs against Russia. “The details of this intelligence partnership, many of which are being disclosed by the New York Times for the first time, have been a closely guarded secret for a decade,” it wrote.

That is, the “closely guarded secret” of complicit US and European media is that NATO provoked the 2022 Russian invasion. Since the 2014 US-backed coup in Kiev that installed Ukraine’s current regime, NATO powers spent tens and hundreds of billions of dollars to build up Ukraine as a military base. The bankrupt post-Soviet capitalist regime in Russia invaded Ukraine as an essentially defensive maneuver, trying to pressure what it calls its “Western partners,” that is, the NATO imperialist powers, to drop their most aggressive policies against Russia.

Since the Stalinist bureaucracy dissolved the Soviet Union in 1991, the NATO powers have waged wars across the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Africa, killing millions. This bloody rampage let the NATO powers plunder the world, while imposing social austerity and strengthening the military-police state against the workers at home.

The disintegration of the Ukrainian front comes as the lies used to justify these wars are now deeply discredited. The Iraqi “weapons of mass destruction” Washington invoked as a pretext to invade oil-rich Iraq in 2003 did not exist. The NATO wars launched in Libya and Syria in 2011, supposedly to defend democracy against authoritarian regimes tied to Russia, ended with the NATO powers backing Israel’s genocide against Gaza. Amid growing social anger and strikes against inflation and austerity, mass protests against the Gaza genocide are unfolding in America, Europe and internationally.

The European ruling class is reacting to this crisis by shifting far to the right. Fearing that a Ukrainian defeat would blow apart the entire edifice of lies used to justify their imperialist wars abroad and class war at home, it has opened a path for World War III to explode across Europe and the world.

The way forward for the working class, as the ruling class turns to global war, is a turn to an international, revolutionary perspective. The urgent task, amid growing strikes against inflation and austerity and mass international opposition to the Gaza genocide, is building an international, anti-war movement based in the working class and fighting for socialism.

I am aware I need to read more on the creation of national identity, because most of my thought is based on simple observation. It is however entirely plain that national identity can appear, and can be genuine, and can do so in a period of merely decades. 

There is now a Ukrainian national identity, and those who subscribe to it have the right to their state.

That they have a right to the former boundaries of Soviet Ukraine is a different proposition. Given the reality that it is plain that a significant minority of the population do not subscribe to Ukrainian national identity, that civil war broke out, and that this relates to historic geographic fracture lines, it seems that division of territory is now not only inevitable, but desirable.
