An estimated half a million Optus Mobile customers were affected by a network outage last night, with only one in three calls reaching intended recipients.

A spokesman for Optus customer service said the outage was due to a problem with Optus' "HLR" (Home Locator Register) system, which routes the calls being made.

At 7:30pm Wednesday the spokesman said the outage occurred "a couple of hours ago" and was unable to provide an indication of when services would be back to normal. "The outage has affected one sixth of Optus' four million customers," adding that Optus' home network customers were not affected.

Services hadn't been restored by midnight but were operating normally this morning.

Optus has been ordered to pay a fine of $5.26 million after losing a case about misleading advertising.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission sued the company, formally known as Singtel Optus, in the Federal Court over an advertising campaign for broadband internet plans launched on Anzac Day last year.

In a judgment published today, the court ruled there was an "essential vice" in the advertisements, because they misled people about the download allowance they could get under the plans.

"They suggested that a consumer would obtain a broadband usage allowance of 120GB or 150GB [depending on the particular plan] consisting of two usages allowances - one peak, one off-peak," Justice Nye Perram said in his judgment.

"In fact, however, this was only true if the consumer was careful to ensure that all of his or her off-peak allowance was exhausted before the peak allowance was fully utilised."

This seems to be in line with the promises made to me (though Gus does not exist) by an Optus surpervisor in India many moon cycles ago... In one big lie I was promised savings that never came but were replaced with more expensive rentals than the expensive Telstra, then... I should have known better... see toon at top.
