The United States and its Syrian Kurdish allies have taken control of wide swathes of eastern Syria, which contains the vast majority of the country’s oil and gas resources, and is its traditional breadbasket. The theft of these resources has forced Syria’s Russian and Iranian allies to provide the country with emergency fuel and food aid.

The US’s pillaging of eastern Syria appears to be continuing unabated, with the Syrian Arab News Agency reporting Sunday that over 45 vehicles loaded with wheat and oil have left the Rmelan area in northeastern Hasakah province heading for the unofficial al-Waleed border crossing with Iraq.

SANA says local sources from al-Swaidiyeh village told the news agency that the convoy of vehicles included 45 truck and tanker vehicles. At the same time, the sources said, a separate convoy of 27 vehicles loaded up with supplies and equipment came through the same crossing and made their way to Rmelan to support the US forces stationed there.

The news comes less than 24 hours after a separate incident, during which 37 tankers carrying oil illegally pumped from the Syrian region of Jazira and several trucks and refrigerators carrying unknown cargoes made their way for the al-Waleed crossing. In that instance, SANA’s sources said multiple tankers were fitted with large covered boxes, and that the convoy was accompanied by machine gun-armed support vehicles said to belong to the Syrian Democratic Forces – the US-allied, predominantly Kurdish militia which enjoys de facto control over much of eastern Syria.

The reported shipment of resources and equipment comes amid warnings by Washington late last month telling US allies in the Middle East to think “very carefully” about any plans to normalise relations with Syria, and threatening them with Caesar Act restrictions – which allow the US to sanction any country or business that cooperates with the government of President Bashar Assad.

Teetering on the brink of collapse in the mid-2010s as a result of a foreign-backed civil conflict, Damascus has, with the military and advisory assistance from Russia, Iran and Lebanon’s Hezbollah militia, managed to beat back and eliminate tens of thousands of jihadists and rebels operating across the country. Reconstruction efforts have been complicated, however, by the US and SDF occupation of wide swathes of territories in Syria’s east from 2017 onwards.

tactical defeat...

The Taliban has seized a key district in Kandahar province after pushing Afghan troops out of the area, adding to a growing list of victories against government forces amid the US military’s exit from the country.

The militant group took the Panjwai district following a fierce overnight battle with soldiers loyal to Kabul, AFP reported, citing regional officials. Panjwai District Governor Hasti Mohammad said government troops retreated from the area following the clashes, and that the Taliban had seized the district police headquarters as well as the governor’s office building. Kandahar Provincial Council head Sayed Jan Khakriwal confirmed the fall of Panjwai, but accused Afghan forces of "intentionally withdrawing.”

The district has seen regular fighting between Taliban and Afghan forces over the years, due to its strategically significant proximity to Kandahar city, the provincial capital. Capturing Panjwai may have more than just military significance for the Taliban, as the group traces its roots to Kandahar.

The insurgents’ territorial gains in the southern province come just two days after US-led forces pulled out of one of the coalition’s main military hubs in the country, Bagram Air Base, located near Kabul. The United States has accelerated its withdrawal from Afghanistan in recent weeks, while some NATO allies have already fully exited from the war-torn nation

Late US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld made colossal errors of judgement during the Iraq War. But strange as it may seem, the thinking behind those terrible mistakes may prove invaluable in tackling the current global crisis.

On June 29, Donald Rumsfeld, the secretary of defense for Presidents Gerald Ford and George W. Bush, and one of the main architects of the US invasion of Iraq, died at the age of 88. He will be remembered mostly for the catastrophic consequences of that invasion.

The goal of the American military intervention was not just to eliminate “the threat of the Iraqi weapons of mass destruction” – none of which were found after the occupation of Iraq – but to change Iraq into a modern secular state that would contain the influence of Iran. As a result, however, Iran only gained more influence in Iraq, Islamic fundamentalism saw a rise, many Christians left the country, women were pushed out of public life, and ISIS emerged out of the mess in Iraq.

What were the roots of such a colossal misjudgment? Here, enter philosophy.

In February 2002, Rumsfeld engaged in a little bit of amateur philosophizing about the relationship between the known and the unknown. “There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. We also know there are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don’t know we don’t know,” he said when asked about the evidence that Iraq could have been supplying WMDs to terrorist groups.

Here I will disagree with Slavoj Zizek...

Donald Rumsfeld did not care about what was known or unknown... He was in full sociopathic mode and in charge of the biggest worldwide deception at the time. What else does he want? In order to deceive the public through the media, he pronounced some rubbish about knowns and unknowns which he actually did not believe in. The only thing he knew is that HE WANTED WAR. The rest was fudge to voodoo us into unquestioning zombies.

*Note: the great search engines (google et al) — any search engine for that matter — are unable OR UNWILLING to locate this line of comments (stuffing the turkeys...)... I do not know why. This is not a somewhat recent refusal to find what I am looking for. The search engines will find things that are TOTALLY irrelevant to my search, with not a single word match. If I was paranoid, I would suggest that I have been targeted by their deliberate ignorance of my existence and unwillingness to help me, but my guess is that due to having the need for more exponential memory and promote paying sites, these search engines have become idiotic at the core of their algorithms. Lucky, I have my own search engine in which I catalogue my own work. It takes me about 9.5 seconds to get there while the other idiots get me nowhere in 0.3 of a second to get stuck in blank stupidity.
