Boris Johnson was reluctant to tighten Covid restrictions as cases rose last autumn because he thought people dying from it were "essentially all over 80", Dominic Cummings has claimed.

He also said the prime minister had messaged him to say: "I no longer buy all this NHS overwhelmed stuff."

Mr Johnson had wanted to let Covid "wash through the country" rather than destroy the economy, Mr Cummings said.

The claims came in an interview with BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg.

It is the first time Mr Cummings - Mr Johnson's former chief adviser - has given a one-on-one TV interview during his career in politics.

In response, Downing Street said the prime minister had taken the "necessary action to protect lives and livelihoods, guided by the best scientific advice" throughout the pandemic.

 

And the government had prevented the NHS "from being overwhelmed through three national lockdowns", a spokesperson added.

In a wide-ranging interview, Mr Cummings also said that, near the start of the pandemic last year, Mr Johnson had wanted to keep his weekly face-to-face meetings with the Queen going - but he had to warn his boss that she might die if she caught coronavirus.

And he defended his controversial decision to drive to his parents' farm in County Durham after the first lockdown started, but admitted he had not "come clean" about all the reasons behind it, including "security concerns" around his family home in London.

This is the first major interview Mr Cummings has given, but he has answered MPs' questions on the government's response to Covid.

The claims made at that session were explosive, but he's since been criticised for failing to provide the evidence to back up some of those assertions.

Science officer Spock and a lieutenant beam down to a dying planet to investigate and retrieve a research team. They find the researchers frozen to death, seemingly unaware of their surroundings, one is frozen fully clothed in a shower, and another is strangled. Though clothed in protective environmental gear, the lieutenant removes his glove to scratch his nose while on the planet, and contracts the same virus that killed the research team.

COVID-19: England's 'Freedom Day' comes amid surging infection rates

Almost all of the remaining restrictions have been lifted in what's been dubbed 'Freedom Day.' Nightclubs have roared back to life, indoor venues are open at full capacity, and masks are longer legally mandated. But the relaxing of measures has many worried as cases surge.

A group of investors led by the Soros Economic Development Fund (SEDF) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have financed the buyout of UK diagnostic technologies firm Mologic, which has developed a 10-minute coronavirus test. 

To make the acquisition, the group has launched Global Access Health (GAH), a social enterprise aiming to expand access to affordable medical technology. The members of the GAH are reportedly set on investing over $41 billion in the acquisition deal. The transaction will include the buyout of all Mologic’s existing shares, including those held by two private investment managers, Foresight Group LLP and Calculus Capital.

 

“The COVID-19 pandemic has painfully demonstrated the fundamental inequities in global public health, and in particular the crucial importance of access to […] life-saving diagnostic tools. In this unique transaction, philanthropic funds and investors are working together […] to address at least one part of that failure by enabling a cutting-edge commercial business to focus all its resources on solving one of the world’s most pressing public health issues,” Sean Hinton, SEDF’s chief executive officer, has said, commenting on the deal.

Mologic was founded in 2003 by Mark Davis and his father Professor Paul Davis, one of the creators of the world's first home pregnancy test, ClearBlue*. Mologic develops tests for a variety of diseases at affordable prices and recently received a CE mark (Conformité Européenne) for its coronavirus disease Covid-19 tests, which the company plans to sell at just $1 each.

However, the Covid-19 test has yet to be approved for use in both the UK and the US. Mologic recently received £1 million ($1.4 million) from the UK authorities for its Covid-19 tests development, but later accused the government of “stonewalling” the usage of the tests within the country.
