Canberra researchers are tickling rats in a bid to boost their emotional wellbeing and improve their interactions with humans.

It may read like an out-take from Stuart Little, but according to the ACT government's Centre for Health and Medical Research these so-called tickle sessions have a positive effect on the rodents.

A poster presented to a Canberra Health Annual Research meeting last month and then published on the ACT Health website, said rat tickling could lessen the impact of handling, making it easier to carry out research with the animals.

The poster also said tickling reduced the rats' fear response and even acted as a type of "social enrichment."

Russian Disinformation Targets Vaccines and the Biden Administration

A new campaign appears to be spreading falsehoods about the potential for forced inoculations against Covid-19.

The cartoon posted on the far-right discussion forum showed police officers wearing Biden-Harris campaign logos on bulletproof vests and battering down a door with a large syringe. A caption read in part, “In Biden’s America.”

The cartoon appears to be an example of the latest effort in Russian-aligned disinformation: a campaign that taps into skepticism and fears of coronavirus vaccination to not just undermine the effort to immunize people but also try to falsely link the Biden-Harris administration to the idea of forced inoculations. The image was one of several spotted by Graphika, a company tracking disinformation campaigns.

Both Russia and China have worked to promote their own vaccines through messaging that undermines American and European vaccination programs, according to the State Department’s Global Engagement Center. But in addition to overt messaging promoting their own vaccines, Moscow has also spread conspiracy theories. Last year, the department began warning about how Russia was using fringe websites to promote doubts around vaccinations.

It is difficult to quantify the amount of disinformation being produced at any time by the Russians or other adversarial powers, government officials and outside experts said. But the rise of the Delta variant of the coronavirus — and shifting scientific advice on how to defend against a more infectious strain and the need for booster shots or masks — has created an atmosphere for misinformation to more easily spread, experts said.

Now, one could believe that this NYT article is ALSO disinformation... The article does not link to the the "offending" cartoon and IT IS NOWHERE TO BE SEEN so far. Nor is the"far-right discussion forum". Where is it? Gus has spend quite a few hours looking for a whiff of it. NONE.

Meanwhile, the Sputnik V vaccine has been derided by the West, OVERTLY — not through a "right-wing" forum that no-one can find, meaning that if ever it exists, very very few people have seen it... So, as I cannot find the offending cartoon, I made a poor imitation of it.

spooking the animals...

TOKYO—A sumo wrestler that may have spooked the horses has been knocked out of the Olympic equestrian ring.

The statue and a nearby patch of cherry trees that riders thought might be startling the animals during the individual jumping event were among the obstacles swapped out for the start of the team competition Friday night.

Officials say designer Santiago Varela had planned on removing the sumo wrestler even before riders said the life-sized rikishi might be rankling their animals.

Several pairings in the early stages of Tuesday’s individual qualifying stopped short near the sumo wrestler, who was positioned next to the 10th obstacle on the 14-jump course. The hurdle was located right after a sharp turn, and the wrestler’s wedgied backside was the first thing in sight for horse and human.
