the glory and the piece of peace for some.....

Self-censorship from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, after she deleted a tweet which mentioned Ukrainian casualties, is “humiliating”, former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev said on Wednesday.

He added that the climbdown showed the bloc is nothing but a US puppet.

“It is obvious that ‘Aunt Ursula’ was slapped upside the head by her bosses in Washington,” Medvedev said in a post on VK. “Seemed to hurt, too. It looks extremely humiliating.”

The president of the EU executive body had claimed in a speech that 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers had died in the fighting so far, along with 20,000 civilians. Soon afterward, however, the tweet about it on von der Leyen’s account vanished. The reference was also removed from the transcript of the speech on the European Commission’s website, and edited out of the video the EC shared on social media again.

The self-censorship was subsequently confirmed, with spokeswoman Dana Spinant saying the number had been an “estimation” from “external sources” and referred to all casualties – those killed and wounded combined. Spinant also thanked everyone who “pointed out the inaccuracy” in von der Leyen’s original speech.

Medvedev served as the president of Russia between 2008 and 2012, and then as prime minister until 2020, when he accepted the post of deputy chairman of the National Security Council.

He has been an outspoken critic of the West since the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine. On Tuesday, he said NATO was a “criminal entity” that should repent for its crimes against humanity and be dissolved. Earlier this week, he commented on his Telegram account that the “marriage” between the EU and the US is headed for a divorce due to Washington’s “economic cheating.”

restricted.......

The European Commission says it sees “no need to apologize” to Ukraine for a now-deleted statement made by its president, Ursula Von Der Leyen, who claimed the Ukrainian military had suffered 100,000 fatalities in its conflict with Russia.

“We explained on social media the reasons and the context in which this was made,” EC spokesperson Dana Spinant stated during a press conference in Brussels on Thursday, after she was pressed by several reporters to explain how the incident occurred.

On Wednesday, von Der Leyen stated in a video published on Twitter that “more than 100,000 Ukrainian military officers have been killed” in the nine months since Russia sent troops into the country, adding that around 20,000 civilians have also lost their lives due to the fighting.

The EC president’s statement sparked a backlash from Kiev, whose officials insisted that the death toll was “classified information” and subject to “restriction on publication.”

8,300.......

The Ukrainian Armed Forces lost over 8,000 troops and a significant number of military equipment over the course of November, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu insisted on Tuesday.

Shoigu declared that, in November, Kiev’s losses amounted to more than 8,300 military personnel, five airplanes, ten helicopters, 149 tanks and more than 300 armored fighting vehicles. He added that Russia’s forces have inflicted considerable damage to Kiev's military potential using long-range precision weapons to conduct massive strikes against Ukrainian military command centers and military-industrial complex facilities.

In late September, Shoigu claimed that Ukrainian forces had suffered a total of more than 61,000 combat losses since Moscow launched its military operation against Kiev in February. He also noted that Russia’s losses were ten times less, at around 6,000 soldiers.

While Kiev has refrained from releasing official casualty numbers of its armed forces, it has disputed the figures provided by the Russian Defense Ministry. President Vladimir Zelensky stated in September that the Ukrainian army was losing some 50 people a day, but noted that it was “five times less” than Russian casualties.

Last week, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen published a speech in which she claimed that “more than 100,000 Ukrainian military officers” had been killed during the conflict. The video, however, was later deleted and re-uploaded without the casualty estimate after it sparked outrage in Kiev, which claimed that it was “sensitive information” that should only be released by top Ukrainian officials.
