baiting the voters with elastic stats....

CNN — Yet again, the federal government spent far more than it collected in revenue, racking up a budget deficit of $1.8 trillion for fiscal year 2024, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

While the deficit is typically a concern during presidential election years, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have unveiled pricey policies without detailing how they’d fully pay for the measures. Trump’s platform could hike the national debt by $7.5 trillion over a decade, while Harris’ package could increase it by $3.5 trillion [GUSNOTE: THIS CNN FIGURE IS CRAP... — IN RELATION TO THE PRESENT DEFICIT, THIS $3.5 TRILLION WILL BE A MINIMUM OVER TWO YEARS OR 17.5 TRILLION OVER 10 YEARS OR MORE THAN TWICE THE DEFICIT "PREDICTED" FOR TRUMP'S ADMIN], according to a recent analysis by the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

Also, the continued fiscal imbalance could make it more difficult for Congress to reach a spending deal for fiscal year 2025 and to address the debt ceiling, which returns on January 2. Lawmakers reached a deal last month to fund the government until December 20, avoiding a shutdown.

The unemployment rate in the United States fell to 4.1% in September 2024, the lowest in three months, down from 4.2% in the previous month and surprising market expectations, which had forecasted the rate to remain unchanged. The number of unemployed individuals decreased by 281,000 to 6.834 million, while employment levels increased by 430,000 to 161.864 million. Meanwhile, the labor force participation rate was steady at 62.7%, and the employment-population ratio increased to 60.2% from 60%. source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

going boeing...

In short:
Boeing has announced it will cut 10 per cent of its workforce — 17,000 workers — in the coming months, after suffering heavy production losses.
More than 33,000 of its factory workers have been on strike since mid-September over higher wage demands.
What's next?
The company is already about $US60 billion in debt and expecting to plummet a further $US5 billion in this year's third quarter.

Boeing will cut 17,000 jobs, delay first deliveries of its 777X jet by a year and record $US5 billion ($7.4 billion) in losses in the third quarter, as the US plane-maker continues to spiral during a month-long strike.

CEO Kelly Ortberg said in a message to employees Boeing must shrink its workforce "to align with our financial reality" after an ongoing strike by 33,000 US West Coast workers stopped production of its 737 MAX, 767 and 777 jets.

"We reset our workforce levels to align with our financial reality and to a more focused set of priorities. Over the coming months, we are planning to reduce the size of our total workforce by roughly 10 per cent," her message said.

"These reductions will include executives, managers and employees."

Boeing shares fell 2.12 per cent in after-market trading.

The sweeping changes are a big move by Ms Ortberg, who arrived in August at the helm of the beleaguered plane-maker promising to reset relations with the union and its employees.

Thomas Hayes, equity manager at Great Hill Capital, said by email the lay-offs could put pressure on employees to end the strike.

"Striking workers who temporarily do not have a pay cheque, do not want to become unemployed workers who permanently do not have a pay cheque," he said.

"I would estimate the strike will be resolved within a week as these workers do not want to find themselves in the next batch of 17,000 cuts."

About 33,000 union machinists have been on strike since September 14.
